Where Should I Buy Domain Name
-
I’m brand new to this, and after a lot of reading, I’ve decided to go with the upgrade for my own domain name. Should I pay $15 to have WP provide me with my name, or purchase the name myself? With WP it looks like I have to pay $15 each year, while if I buy it once elsewhere it’s a one-time purchase and I only have to pay $10 to WP each year for the upgrade. Am I making any sense?

There is a yearly fee whichever registrar you use. It is never a one-time only payment (unless they are running some kind of special marketing campaign).
I recommend not using wp.com when buying a domain because the domain management system at wp.com is very very limited, especially if you want to do more with the domain than just using it for a blog on wp.com.
With wp.com it’s $14.97 every year for as long as your blog and domain are on wp.com.
If you buy your domain somewhere else it’s $9.97every year for mapping the domain to your blog and $?? every year at your registrar for securing the domain itself.

If you purchase the domain name from WordPress.com your actual name will appear in the Whois data, so if anonymity is important to you you’ll want to get a different registrar.
