Where to look on my dashboard for domain mapping?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I have designed a wordpress.com blog which I would like to use as my website. I have a website which is hosted with a hosting company. I want to move it from the hosting company and point the domain to wordpress.com nameservers. I went to the domain registrar company and added the DNS that I found in wordpress.com. Although I know it takes about 72 hours for this to get to work, I don’t think the job is complete without something that needed to be added to my wordpress.com blog. Where do I find these details? Is this now become a paid service? I don’t think this was 3 years ago. But, if it is, where do I go from my dashboard will I find this tab to upgrade or pay for the domain mapping? Thanks in advance for your help. Sincerely, S

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If you would like to map to a domain that you own from your wordpress.COM blog you will first need to set up domain mapping.

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it every year, and renew the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is.It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

If you own a domain then see here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

    Hi there,

If I understand correctly. Let me write down what I already have and what I need to do. And please tell me, if I am right. I will them go ahead and do it.

    What I have:
    1. Domain name purchased many years ago, NOT from wordpress.com. I have been renewing it from the registrant company every 2 years. Let’s say this domain name is example: ABC.com
    2. ABC.com Website is hosted at the moment with a hosting company.

    Scenario:

I have recently created a blog in wordpress.com that has all the info of ABC.com
I wish to have this blog as my website. So, that when people type in ABC.com, my wordpress.com blog comes up.

Here is what I already did:

I went to store>myupgrade…. and it asked me to type the domain name to map. When I typed in http://www.ABC.com it prompted that ‘www’ subdomain can not be mapped. BUT, when I type the name as only abc.com without the ‘www’ it is then accepted and I am asked to pay the $13 yearly fees.

My question is this is the right thing to do, given the scenario as mentioned above.

Please let me know. Many thanks for your help.

    Sincerely,

PS: I have already added the 3 DNS in my account with the Registrant. And I am hoping by mapping and paying the $13 this process will be completed ( within 72 hours or so).

    Hi members,

I went ahead and bought this (since there is a 30 days refund options, I wanted to try it out). I am guessing the propagation has already been completed because when I type in http://www.abc.com the abc.wordpress.com page shows up. But, it doesn’t show the address as http://www.abc.com. It is instead it changes to just abc.com

Just need someone to tell me that this is how it is going to work OR no, this is wrong and there is another way to do this where the website address will show as is, i.e. http://www.abc.com.

Any one out there to help me get this resolved, please?

    Many thanks.
