Where to Submit My EPP (Domain Transfer) code to transfer my Domain to WordPress?
-
Hello! I have arranged with my present website Domain Name host (Vistaprint/ Webs.com) to now point my Domain Ownership to WordPress.com. But I don’t know where I find the form or slot on WordPress to submit the EPP Code (Transfer Code). In my WordPress website, there is a shopping cart which has payment awaiting for the Transfer of my Domain (from Vistaprint to WordPress). Shall I just go ahead and click on that payment (paying by debit card)? Where do I type in my EPP code?

Hi there – I recommend reviewing our guide here for how to prepare and transfer a domain to you WordPress.com account: https://wordpress.com/support/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/
It should answer your question and more.
A quick question related to this: are you transferring your domain from Vistaprint/Webs.com so that you can build a new site here on WordPress.com? If not, could you let us know what your goals are with this domain transfer?

Hello Dean, and thank you very much for your kind reply.
I wish to transfer my website that is currently on Vistaprint to WordPress as a source of information about a particular Buddhist scripture (called the ‘Nirvana Sutra’). Vistaprint (formerly ‘Webs.com’) used to allow me free ownership of my website, but now (as ‘Vistaprint’) they no longer do so and want to charge high amounts for the privilege of having a website on their platform. I therefore wish to leave them and come over to WordPress.
I tried last night to pay for the Domain transfer to WordPress (using my English ‘Santander’ debit card), but the card was not accepted, even though it is thoroughly up-to-date. Maybe it was declined as the price quoted in my WordPress shopping cart for the Domain Transfer is given in Thai Baht (I live in Thailand), whereas the money in my English bank account is Pounds Sterling. Maybe I need to ask a Thai to use their Thai debit/credit card for this payment …
I did look at the Instructions on Domain Transfer, but still could not find where exactly in the process I have to include the EPP Code. Perhaps I missed that point and need to read all the Instructions again.
At present my ‘nirvanasutra.net’ website has suddenly disappeared from public sight from the Internet, after I got Vistaprint to point Domain ownership in the direction of WordPress last night. So I am in a limbo: neither ‘present’ on Vistaprint, nor yet present under the Domain Name of ‘nirvanasutra.net’ on WordPress!
Thank you again for any help you can offer on these various points. All the best, Dean. From – Tony -

The charges were declined by your bank/credit card company, so please contact them directly to find out why this is. We have no other information besides an error that the card was declined when we tried to charge it.
We can update your account currency to GBP if you prefer, but it’s unlikely that’s the reason why the charge is being declined.

You’ll only see the option to do this once you’ve bought the domain transfer upgrade:

Keep in mind that transferring the domain will only transfer the domain. It will not transfer any of the content you have published at Vistaprint. To do that you’ll have to ask Vistaprint for a XML export of your content that can be imported to a WordPress site.
If Vistaprint does not offer an export option that’s compatible with WordPress, you’ll need to copy over all your content manually to the new site with us.

Thank you very much, Kokkieh,
for your very informative answers.
I suspect it might be a bit too complicated to transfer my Domain Name (my debit card does not seem to work for this transaction), and so I will probably just use the free URL from WordPress which I currently have for my website.
Thank you again for all your help. Much appreciated.
Best wishes,

It’s not that complicated to transfer a domain. Once you have cleared your payment issue with your bank transferring the domain is a relatively straightforward process.
If you have any other questions, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help.

Hello again dear Fstat:
I have now successfully paid for my Domain Name to be transferred from Webs.com to WordPress.com. The transfer is in progress (as of today) and I am told could take 7 days to complete.
I notice that there is something on WordPress about ‘Update DNS’ (or similar); I have already told my previous website host (Webs.com) that they should point my Domain to the following:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.comThey say they have done it (and thus my website is currently not visible on the Internet, presumably until the Domain transfer to WordPress goes through).
When I tried to write those ‘ns1, etc.’ lines above into the ‘Update DNS’ page, it said ‘invalid’. Do I really have to fill the ‘Update DNS’ in – or will my Domain transfer go ahead perfectly well and my website be usable and visible without that? If not, I don’t know what I am supposed to type into ”Update DNS”!
Can you please advise?
Many thanks for your help.
Best wishes to you – from Tony

Hi Tony,
Your domain is already being transferred in; it’s using our nameservers, so you do not have to do anything else but wait :).
Domain transfers usually take around 5 days to be completed. You can work on your site in the meantime.
Bear in mind that you won’t be able to set the domain as your primary address without a paid plan, though. Here’s an overview of all our plans and their features:
https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/.
Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Hello dear Fresatomica,
Thank you very much! That is good news. I am relieved that my Domain transfer is going through.
If I choose the ‘personal plan’ from WordPress (pay 18 US Dollars per year), can I then have as my full Domain Name and URL: ‘nirvanasutra.net’? This is what I have been using until now (on ‘Webs.com’). I would like to continue with that ‘nirvanasutra.net’ Domain name as the sole Domain name for my site (nothing added before or after those words!). What do you think?
Thank you again for your kind help.
All best wishes,

Correct. Your domain is already redirecting traffic to your WordPress.com site, https://nirvanasutranet.wordpress.com/, by the way – that started happening the moment you pointed your name servers to us and started the transfer. It’s just not the domain visible in the browser address bar, as that requires a paid plan.
If you upgrade to any paid plan, you can make nirvanasutra.net primary, and it will start showing in the browser address bar right away. You don’t need to wait for the transfer to complete to do this.

Thank you very much, Kokkieh!
How can I create my own Homepage (with ONLY the photo and text of my own choosing – not one already put there by WordPress)? Can I do that on a free version of my website?
Thank you very much for your help.
Best wishes – Tony -
Go to My Site ->Pages and edit the page titled Home. Then simply delete any content already there and replace it with what you want.
Or if you prefer go to My Site ->Pages ->Add New to create a completely new page from scratch. Then once you’ve published the page, go to Appearance ->Customize ->Homepage settings, and select the new page as the front page.
In case it’s useful, we have a getting started guide at https://wordpress.com/support/getting-started-with-wordpress-com/ that will cover most of the basics of creating your site on WordPress.com, and we have a more detailed tutorial at https://wordpress.com/learn/

Sorry to ask another question (or three)!
If I pay for the ‘Personal Plan’ (the basic one, approx. 18 US Dollars per year), will that renew my Domain Name automatically each year and take payment from my bank account? I would like to do that. I don’t want to lose my Domain Name (‘nirvanasutra.net’).
I transferred to WordPress.com today my Domain Name (‘nirvanasutra.net’) from Webs.com. I will not use the Webs.com site any more (will not pay anything to them). Will they still always ‘point’ people towards my ‘nirvanasutra.net’ site on WordPress.com as they are doing today (they told me that after 31 May my website will not be visible to me or anyone on their hosting site)? I am still rather confused by the whole process! The main thing is that I want the situation to continue whereby anyone who types into the URL bar ‘nirvanasutra.net’ will always be directed towards the WordPress manifestation of my website. Will that be the case if I pay each year for the cheapest ‘Personal Plan’? What if I pay nothing? How then can I keep my Domain Name alive on WordPress? Sorry for all these questions!
Thank you again for your help and information.
All the best – Tony -
Thank you hugely to Kokkieh for a very, very informative reply!

It should, yes. Once you get the Personal plan in place, reach out to support here and they can double check that will renew with your plan next year:
https://wordpress.com/help/contact
Make sure you skip the domain selection process when you purchase that plan since you’ve already transferred your domain to us.
Regarding your domain name, anyone who would visit the domain name will be routed to your new site here at WordPress.com – so once you get the plan in place, you can set your domain name as the primary domain for your site by following the steps here:
https://wordpress.com/support/domains/#set-a-primary-address
If you need to import content from your old site, please do that before your hosting at Webs.com runs out.
I hope that clarifies things!

Hello Csonnek:
Thank you very much indeed for a really helpful reply (regarding my Domain Name continuing after I pay for the basic Personal Plan). You explain everything so well and so clearly. In fact, I am very impressed by all the people on WordPress.com (these help threads) who have been brilliant and swift in answering my queries. As a newbie to WordPress.com, and in view of my very positive experiences so far, I would certainly recommend WordPress.com to others!Thank you again and best wishes to you.
