Where’s my image?

  • Unknown's avatar

My image in the sidebar has been replaced with a massive sign “TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE”. In the widget box for the image it now reads: <img src=”http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/12611/2004675462124777829_rs.jpg”>

Which I didn’t put there. What’s happened? Where’s the photo of yours truly gone?

Was the photo uploaded to wordpress or did you have it hosted somewhere else? At webshots.com perhaps?

If I go to http://aycu12.webshots.com/image/12611/2004675462124777829_rs.jpg I see the temporarily unavailable message.

The previous photo (my image) was uploaded from my own computer. I’ve never had anything to do with this aycu12 site. It looks like someone else has changed it. I don’t know how. Obviously I can removc the imported image but I want to leave it there for the moment in case someone can shed some light on how this could happen.

If you uploaded the photo to your WordPress file it should be in the Uploads box. Click Browse All and you can root around till you find it. Once you do, you can replace the b0rked URL with the proper one, which you get by clicking on the image, then clicking on Edit.

A shot in the dark but the aycu site may have been one you were looking at and copied the URL and accidentally pasted it where you wanted something else to be.

Thanks but no, I’ve never been to that URL and I’ve never touched the widget since my image was pasted there last April. No one else has touched my computer either so its somehow been hacked. I can fix it but I want to know how security can be (apparently) breached like this.

  • Unknown's avatar

No idea. But are you able to put your proper image where it should be, using the instructions here? Security is something only staff can advise on, and in my experience they will only do so via email.

You might want to send this in to support. I’ve never known a URL to be changed, and the security here is pretty tight so I would have a hard time believing someone “hacked” into wordpress and changed the URL on your image, but I have no explanation or even wild speculation at this point.

Like tsp said, was the image uploaded to WordPress, or to an external site like Flickr or Photobucket? Because the answer to that is the answer to where the problem lies.

The original image was uploaded to wordpress

  • ray: I suspect that, while you did upload the image to your WordPress.com blog, you inadvertently pointed the image URL at a webshots.com address (which is now invalid, obviously).

Thanks but I don’t follow. I haven’t touched the widget box. Are you saying the image can be changed by clicking on it or something like that? The original image was uploaded 9 months ago.

I’ve removed the errant image and put the original one back but would still like to know how this could happen. It wasn’t done from here.

  • ray: there’s nothing at WordPress.com that would change your widget or make an image to point to webshots.com.

My best guess is that it’s been that way all along – perhaps you mistakenly linked to the same image at the webshots.com address – and webshots has just recently removed the image. There’s no way to tell.
