Whether to transfer or map domain name

    I’m setting up my first ever website for my company and have purchased a domain name through Dynadot. I’m not sure what the pros ad cons are of transferring the domain name to wordpress vs. mapping to it. Any advice?

    Hi there,

    The biggest pro of transferring your domain is that you will be able to manage your site and domain from the same place, and you’ll only need to pay one provider for both.

    As for con, not all providers have the same pricing for domains, so a particular domain might cost more to renew with us than elsewhere (though the opposite of that is also true). And if you currently have a lot of custom DNS set up on your domain for email and other services, moving them to us might be a bit complicated and we might not offer support for the exact DNS configuration you need. In that case mapping the domain to us using IP addresses would be better.

    But if you don’t have any special configuration on your domain currently, from a technical perspective there’s not really any real difference between mapping and transferring, so the biggest concerns are convenience and cost.

    And some people would counsel that you should always keep your domain and hosting separate, because if a provider goes out of business that at least means you won’t lose both. We don’t have any plans to go under, though :)
