Which free themes are the fastest

My theme (twenty seventeen) is quite slow so I’d like to change it to a faster one. Any suggestions of which ones would be the fastest? There’s lots of information on the fastest themes on the internet but all the information I’ve seen focuses on the WordPress.org themes…

Hi there,
Your site is loading pretty quickly on my end and I don’t see any lag. Have you tried a different theme and saw a difference in loading times?
Also, can you please try loading your site from a different internet connection to make sure it’s not something on your end?

I checked my site in the summer on various website speed checkers and it was consistently coming out low. As far as I know the website speed checkers do it on their servers rather than my possibly slow internet connection.
I asked about how to speed my blog up on this forum (here’s the link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/how-can-i-speed-up-my-free-wordpress-blog/) but didn’t resolve anything hence my thoughts that I should change theme as this is one of the common problems.

The biggest speed hits are the images, and the theme you’re using right now does favor a large header image.
If you really want to make things any faster than that, pursuing a theme that does not favor images and is particularly minimal may be your best option, like these:
