  • Unknown's avatar

it is probably just me, but I cannot figure out which free themes display descriptions for categories, I only know that the one I am using does not – can anyone please help?

I apologies if the question is really basic, I am a newbie.

    Thank you!

  • Hi @lovestoswatch ,

I tried clicking your blog link, but it seems you have your site set to private. Do you own a paid plan with WordPress.com? If so, then you can keep your site set to private and ask for live chat staff support. If you don’t have a paid plan and want to keep your site private, then to better assist you, would you mind answering the following questions so we can better understand your situation?

    • What is the theme you are currently using?
    • Do you know of a theme or site that uses the category descriptions feature you are looking for? If so, would you mind sharing that theme/site with us?
    • Could you help me understand by explaining in a bit more detail what you mean by “category descriptions”? Where in your pages/posts/menus did you want this to appear?

    Thanks.

thank you @musicsuzuranbbc, apologies for that, yes my blog is set to private and I do not have a paid plan, but I do not need specific help with it, but more general help on how to find themes supporting the “show category description” feature without trying each theme individually with my blog.

I was using Button 2, which does not support category description, then moved to Ixion, which does, but I’d like to find out without having to try them all.

In terms of what I mean by category description, if you look at the demo site:
    https://ixiondemo.wordpress.com/?demo

and click on a category, say books:
    https://ixiondemo.wordpress.com/category/books/

if it had a description , e.g. “here I collect all my books” it would show just below “Category” Books” and just above the separator, before the first post. It would provide a description for what goes into this category.

The problem is that not even the demo site is clear on whether or not it can display the categories, which is why I was asking here. I’ve tried the search function through the themes, but it does not select themes based on this feature.

thanks @musicsuzuranbbc, yes my blog is set to private, but what I was after is not help with my specific site, but more in general in finding themes displaying the category description – this is a piece of text that would show below the category title on a category page, just above all the posts in that specific category.

I was using Button 2, which does not display descriptions, but I found that Ixion does. Problem is, you can’t even tell from the demo site necessarily, you have to try it on with your own blog (where I have added descriptions to categories) to check if the feature is there, and I was hoping there was a quicker way to check.

    Thank you.

  • Thank you for the extra information. I tested out the theme you mentioned (Ixion) and could replicate what you mentioned about having the category description appear after you click the category.

I then applied your current theme, Button 2, to my site. I actually got the same result with that theme, too. When I click on a category, it takes me to a page with posts from that category. At the very top of the page, right underneath the category name, it also showed the category description.

So, if you are comfortable with continuing using Button 2, I could help you work out why your page isn’t showing the category description, as my site is.

I also tried looking around for information on themes that explicitly explain they show category descriptions. Same as you, I didn’t come up with much. As it currently stands, you may have to apply a theme to your site before you know whether it shows a category’s description or not. (However, the couple of sites I run all had this feature enabled. I have never given it any thought, but after reading your post here, I checked my sites and they all show category descriptions by default.)
