Which is best for us: .com or .org?

    Hello,

We are an NPO organization working to provide broadcast media students real-life projects to hone their skills on.
One such project is a music orientated site featuring: IPTV show, IP radio programming, and blog.

We plan to use the WordPress “Soundcheck” theme template.

We would like to have the following features:
    • custom domain
    • some customization on font and color but not straying too far from the template
    • one premium theme (Soundcheck)
    • no ecommerce other than links to affiliate programs
    • ability to upload and store unlimited photos, video and audio files
    • No ads other than for our sponsors or a revenue split from third party ads.
    • Works on mobile devices regardless of OS or language (English and Japanese)
    • Support in Japanese

    Some questions we have are:
Once the template is purchased do we own it or are we only renting it?
Are there any extra fees for using the template once it is initially purchased?
Will the soundcheck theme work on mobile devices regardless of OS in Japanese?
Can we run ads of our sponsors on the site?
If WordPress runs ads on our site, what is the revenue split?
What changes are we allowed to make to colors and fonts without purchasing the custom design upgrade?
Can we take the template and use it elsewhere without mentioning “WordPress”
    Are discounts offered for NPOs?

    Sorry for the ignorance.

    Sincerely,
    Con

    Hello there,
I’m tagging this thread for Staff responses to your questions. While waiting you can read what follows.

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.

See here for details in regard to all available upgrades. http://en.support.wordpress.com/upgrades/

See here for ecommerce details http://en.support.wordpress.com/ecommerce/

Note that the free plan and the Premium plan do not allow you to upload your own themes or plugins. WordPress.com blogs cannot be equipped for eCommerce transactions unless they have the $299. per year Business upgrade. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/ecommerce-is-now-available-on-wordpresscom?replies=1

A self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, conduct ecommerce and edit the database. Learn about the differences here. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  • Support in Japanese

We can only guarantee support in English at this time, but you are more than welcome to write in Japanese, and we will do our best to translate and write back with the correct answer in English.

Once the template is purchased do we own it or are we only renting it? [and] Are there any extra fees for using the template once it is initially purchased? [and] Can we take the template and use it elsewhere without mentioning “WordPress”?

You own the theme on WordPress.com. This means that you have full use of theme on your blog at WordPress.com, you will not be charged any other fees to continue to use it, but you cannot take it with you if you leave WordPress.com.

Will the soundcheck theme work on mobile devices regardless of OS in Japanese?

The theme will function on all devices regardless of language.

Can we run ads of our sponsors on the site? [and] If WordPress runs ads on our site, what is the revenue split?

We do have an advertising program called WordAds, in which we split the revenue with you, and which you can read more about here:

    WordAds

Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed. For full details, please see:

    Advertising

    http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

If you require other advertising, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on advertising if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities. Please see this link to learn about the differences:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested:

What changes are we allowed to make to colors and fonts without purchasing the custom design upgrade?

Color and Font changes with Soundcheck would require a Custom Design upgrade.

    Are discounts offered for NPOs?

At the moment, we are not able to offer discounts for Non-Profit Organizations.

Please let us know if you have any more questions!

    Thanks for the reply.

What are the standard color(s) and fonts (Japanese and English) included with the Soundcheck theme without purchasing the Custom Design upgrade?

Is anything other than purchasing the theme required to upload both video and audio files to Soundcheck?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.

  • What are the standard color(s) and fonts (Japanese and English) included with the Soundcheck theme without purchasing the Custom Design upgrade?

SoundCheck only includes the colors and fonts the come with the theme itself, there are no additional colors or fonts without the Custom Design upgrade.

You can find more info on that at http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/soundcheck/

Is anything other than purchasing the theme required to upload both video and audio files to Soundcheck?

Uploading audio requires a Space Upgrade, and uploading video requires a VideoPress upgrade.

You can get Custom Design, Space, and VideoPress, along with other upgrades, in any one of the bundles: http://store.wordpress.com/plans/

♫ Good morning ♫ and thanks for the assistance in this thread.

  • My pleasure, and good morning to you too! :)

Thanks again for all your assistance with my questions.
    I apologize for my ignorance.

Due to the ban of ads other than those from WordPress WordAds we will have to go with the .org option. I am assuming that there no exceptions and the Business option does not allow second party ads.

With the .org. option are the Space Upgrade and the VideoPress upgrade still required to post video and audio files to Soundchceck?

I checked the links your provided to find the fonts/colors that come with the standard Soundcheck theme, but was not able to locate the information. Mainly I need to know which Japanese fonts are available.

Is it possible to create a combination of the Premium and Business plans?

Again sorry for the abundance of questions.

    Sincerely,
    Con

You will need a WordPress.ORG solution for your needs.

  • With the .org. option are the Space Upgrade and the VideoPress upgrade still required to post video and audio files to Soundcheck?

No, there are no requirements to uploading audio or video on WordPress.org, and your hosting provider will control your space allotment.

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities.
    http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

WordPress.org has complete support and documentation sites for self-hosted/installed versions of WordPress at:
    http://wordpress.org/support/
    http://codex.wordpress.org/

Is it possible to create a combination of the Premium and Business plans?

No, the plans are only available as-is, but the Business plan does include everything in Premium and more.
