which plan do I need?

  • Unknown's avatar

    I’m a volunteer with a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supporting a local library.
I built a ‘prototype’ Website using a WordPress free site.
Now I’m having trouble getting a clear idea of what a site would REALLY cost to have a clean domain name, and the ability to use PayPal for donations.
I have to KNOW the real answers BEFORE I ask for funding from the organization. They have to vote on it to approve the expense.
Where can I find ALL of the information I need?
(‘Free for a year’ on the WordPress pricing plan Webpage is NOT helpful information when it omits what it would cost AFTER the year.)

Yes a custom domain is included free with the first year of any annual paid WordPress.com plan. The following years you’d pay to renew the plan and also the cost to renew the domain. Domain costs vary with the chosen suffix. See:
    https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
A Premium plan might be sufficient to use PayPal but a Business plan would give you many more options:

  • Hey odlsmith, I get that. I’d recommend the Premium Plan, then use the Pay with PayPal block:
    https://wordpress.com/support/pay-with-paypal/

Pricing for the Premium plan itself is listed here:
    https://wordpress.com/pricing

You can see the pricing varies depending on whether you renew monthly or yearly. And if you already own your domain, you can map it and continue paying for it through your existing registrar.

If you get a yearly plan and transfer your domain, or register it here, the first year of the domain is included in the plan price as a promotion. Then subsequent years are priced separately from the plan:

With domains and annual plans, we typically auto-renew 11 months after your initial purchase, then each year after that. Renewing a month early gives us a chance to sort out any billing issues before expiration.

I tried to be sure I covered everything but I’m sure you might still have questions, so just let us know how we can help. Cheers!

    Thank you, -themagicrobot and -supernovia!

Our Website needs are quite simple (mostly informational), except that we use PayPal for yearly memberships to the “Friends of the Library” volunteer organization, or for library fundraising and donations.
We’re not a business, so we’re trying to keep the Website costs as low as possible.

Thank you for the URLs. I didn’t understand that different domain types were priced differently. Since we are a .org, that is very helpful information.

I will pass the information on to our organization.
    Thank you for the replies.

My free site prototype was created for the purpose of enabling website development conversation for the library volunteers (it did that), but it wasn’t *originally* planned to

      become

the actual “friends of the library” website.

If I upgrade this free site to a Premium plan, I will be able to select a completely new unique domain name like “mylocallibraryorganinzation.org”… Right?

  • That is correct, yes. :)

All paid plans include one free custom domain registration, transfer, or mapping.

Cost is *always* an issue with a non-profit volunteer organization like us.
I am working within a number of constraints.

The .org’s current website is on a volunteer’s server and I don’t think he wants to let go of that domain. (*He knows that transfer is possible, and he did not offer.)

Other volunteers have had Google verify our non-profit status mapped to THAT domain, so I now know that starting a new domain won’t help me.

Do any of the paid plans allow me to download a template?

  • Do any of the paid plans allow me to download a template?

Just to clarify, when you say “template” do you mean “theme”?

    https://wordpress.com/themes

If so, yes, the Business and eCommerce plans allow uploading of third party themes. The Premium plan does not, but it does come with access to our Premium theme library (as well as the standard free themes).

  • Unknown's avatar

Oops, sorry. I’m new to the terminology. Yes, I meant “theme.”

My question is: Do any of the paid plans allow me to

      download

    a theme?
(The question makes sense in the context of my previous posts.)

Since your response was instead about uploading, I’m guessing that the answer is “no.”

  • Unknown's avatar

“Download” means to add something from the Interweb to your own PC/equipment. “Upload” in the case of installing an external theme onto a WordPress.com site means adding something to your site on a WordPress.com server and can be done with a Business plan. Is there a specific theme you need to use as there are a number of perfectly servicable free ones already available to choose from here. The Premium plan gives even more choice of WordPress.com-compatible themes.

I promise I do understand the difference between download and upload.
When the WWW began, I had to download web pages to edit them and then upload them back so viewers could see the changes online. (FTP was my constant friend.) :-)

I really am asking about downloading a theme.
The non-profit .org I’m helping has a volunteer who has a WordPress server and the “volunteer-organization-name.org” domain. The other volunteers don’t want to transfer the domain, AND we have been verified as non-profit by Google for our email, etc. so they don’t want to get a new domain.

Do any of the paid plans allow me to download a theme?

  • If you want to download a theme, modify it, and re-upload it on a WordPress.com site, you’ll need a paid Business or eCommerce plan.

Thank you, everyone, for the help and information!
