which themes allow showcase front page?
-
Is there a list of themes that support showcase front page??? I just switched to ‘chateau’ which has a clean look ; but want to create a static front page with text, images, mix of column and wide . . . that’s a major filter for me; but i cannot go through each and every theme looking for it and that’s not an option in the ‘features’ section of the theme selection tool . . unless i’ve missed something?? which is certainly possible . . .
many thanks, as always, for your support. the site under revision is writinginsidevt.com

Hi Sarah,
The problem with searching for themes that have a showcase template is that the showcase page template has a different effect in different themes. For example, the Oxygen theme and the Hum theme both use showcase templates but with different effects. Rather than searching for the showcase template itself, you can search for the effect you want to have on your front page.
If you want to have a slideshow on your front page to showcase featured posts or images, you can select “Post Slider” in the “Features” section of the theme search. If you want the option to have your page extend the full width without sidebars, you can select “Full Width Template” in the “Features” section. If you are looking for a different effect, please let me know and I can help you search for it. :)

Thanks SO MUCH for this – yes, I looked at HUM briefly; and have just switched to 2012, which looked like it would have a showcase template. We don’t really have a lot of images; but want to be able to set information apart about our upcoming book – maybe a box? – and to put a poem and a recent post on the landing page.
In addition, we want to have a 2-3 line ‘about’ blurb on the front page which we can link to a ‘program’ page with more info. Can that be done with an attachment page that does not show up in the menu? or must it either be its own independent page or a child page?? Don’t want the tabs to become too cluttered . . .
Thanks so much. I’m trying to find the individual tutorials about each theme I have looked at – for now, 2012 and hum – and for some reason find it hard to actually locate the detailed info (rather than the general theme introduction page).
That’s what I’ve got for now!!!
Thanks again for your help :-)

OK – we have settled on HUM. It’s lovely, just the look and feel we were going for.
So here are my specific questions about using that theme:
1 – when we activated it, our custom fonts came along, too! I cannot find any place to let me revert to Hum’s default fonts, which we would prefer. Do I deactivate customization? No option for default fonts . . .
And if so – can I reactivate for some other purpose down the road if desired?2 – is there a way to change the color of the hover text?
3 – we are very drawn to the ‘introductory words’ described under the HUM theme as a feature for the front page; how do we achieve that? currently our ‘introductory words’ are HUGE!!! We need to tame them!!! also want to add some other elements. I’m not ‘getting’ how to add the different elements of a showcase page, though I love how it can look!
4 – can I deactivate having the most recent post on the landing page? I’d rather have other, well . . . static things there . . .
Thanks so much. As always, I know it’s a matter of understanding a few basic things and then it will seem so simple. Each day I learn more and become more comfortable!
[that said, however, I’ll admit I do NOT like the change to the ‘customize’ panel. It’s very limiting and hard to find options. Liked it better before!]
Thanks for getting back to me with your helpful tips –
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
I’m glad the Hum theme works for you! :)
1 – when we activated it, our custom fonts came along, too! I cannot find any place to let me revert to Hum’s default fonts, which we would prefer. Do I deactivate customization?
You don’t need to deactivate your custom design upgrade to revert to the default fonts. There are two ways you can do this:
1. You can open the customizer by going to Appearance > Customize in your dashboard. You can then click on Fonts and click the “x” next to the custom font you are using.
2. You can go to Appearance > Custom Design in your dashboard and click on the Fonts tab. Click on each of the dropdown menus next to the custom font you are using, and at the bottom of the dropdown click the Revert button next to “Or revert to the default font for this theme.”
2 – is there a way to change the color of the hover text?
You can use custom CSS to make a number of customizations to your site’s design, including the color of the link text when you hover over it. If you aren’t familiar with CSS, you may want to start with our guides at these links:
If you would like additional help with CSS, most of our CSS support is done in our community forums by both staff and volunteers:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customizationWhen you create a CSS-related help request, please make sure to select or link to the WordPress.com blog you’re working on and include a clear description of the change you’re trying to make. It really helps.
The text you have on your front page is the introductory message mentioned in the Hum theme description. You can add as much content as you would like to that page, and it will appear along with the introductory message.
To change the size of the text on that page, you can use the tips described here: Font Size and Color
You can also add widgets to the showcase page by going to Appearance > Widgets in your dashboard and adding them to the Showcase Sidebar.
4 – can I deactivate having the most recent post on the landing page? I’d rather have other, well . . . static things there . . .
The Hum showcase template is specifically designed to show your featured and latest posts, so there isn’t a setting to deactivate that. If you prefer to only have static items on your front page, you can switch from using the showcase template to a default page template on that page. If you want to keep using the showcase template and just removed the latest posts, you may be able to do that with custom CSS.
If you have any other questions about this, please let me know!
