I like the tags displaying with the entries. It’s another way of finding related stuff. But I haven’t been able to find a way of displaying the tag cloud in the side bar without a really messy result. Some of my tags are phrases. As the font gets larger, in all of the themes I’ve tried so far, they extend over the normal text margins instead of wrapping around. It would be good to have wrapping but actually I’m not sure the tag cloud paradigm suits my data. It would be good to have different display options for tags in the side bar – eg alphabetic and frequency ranked sort options (no font size changes) as well as tag cloud.

My hope is that soon we’ll see a post here from staff telling us that all wp.com themes are now tag-aware. At that point I’ll mark the topic as resolved.

There should be an option on all themes to allow tags to be invisible. It used to always be invisible on Connections. Now it’s always invisible. There should be an on/off switch but a system that still allows technorati and other systems to pick up the tags. If that’s not possible, I’d prefer the old “no visible tags” default were restored to Connections.

They’re not going to do that because they want as many links to the tag pages as they can get. Multiple links back to wordpress.com are a form of payment for your otherwise free blog.
You can hide tags with the custom CSS upgrade, but you couldn’t do it in Connections without also nuking the post title and comments. Sandbox-10 will hide tags without affecting other elements, but I don’t know whether any other themes do.

They used to hide tags on this theme. Now they don’t. The tags were hidden, but they still were picked up by technorati. No more. This is silly. Tags should be allowed to proliferate, dozens if need be, and there is no need for them to be seen if they were unseen before. Tags are ugly, and the text takes up too much space, not least because it’s right out there in the header of the entries on Connections.

Tags and categories are not the same. Tags were not available until wp 2.3 was introduced. It was not “tags” that were hidden previously in the Connections theme. It was the categories that were and still remain hidden.Setting that aside, IMHO what wank says about requesting that wordpress.com “disappear” the tags on this one theme is true.

So, that means your alternative is to purchase a css upgrade $15 per year for one blog and “disappear” the tags yourself.

Well, I just loaded Connections into my test blog and discovered that it’s now displaying categories immediatly following the title of the blog posts. I am not using tags nor I am creating any sub-categories until this whole “category/tag” bruhaha is over.
