Hi there,
No blogger initiated advertising is allowed on WordPress.com blogs. The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed.
http://support.wordpress.com/advertising/ Here’s what gets a blog suspended:
http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/affiliate-links/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/suspended-blogs/
http://en.wordpress.com/tos/1. WordPress.com allows bloggers to insert text affiliate links within post and page content to most third-party affiliate programs, provided they are not the primary content of the site in question.
2. Image affiliate links in posts and pages and any banners, affiliate links in sidebar or footer widget areas, are still considered to be advertising and are not allowed on WordPress.com blogs.
NOTE: A self-hosted WordPress site might be right for you. WordPress.org offers free software that you can install on a web server. You can upload and install themes and plugins, run ads, conduct ecommerce and edit the database. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and have different logins, features, run different versions of some themes with the same names, and have separate support documentation and separate support forums. Read the differences here http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there.
Resetting your WordPress.ORG password http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
WordPress.org support docs are at https://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page -
thank you for your help i think a self hosted is what i want then. i would like to keep my website and not change it except purchase it or purchase the hosting i want to use it with affiliatte programs so is why i want to pay for it outright

To move your content you need to create an XML export file of your content. It will not include the theme as they cannot be exported.
1. Hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/
2. Set up a WordPress.org install and equip it with a theme and plugins.
http://wordpress.org/themes/
http://wordpress.org/plugins/3. Export your content out of your WordPress.com blog http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/ and import it into the install.
4. Purchase a site redirect upgrade from wordpress.com
http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ or if you have domain mapping then update the nameservers http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-management/5. Transfer subscribers and stats. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/
6. Set your wordpress.com blog visibility to private. To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Alternatively you can purchase a Guided Transfer and Staff will do the move and set up for you http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/
NOTE: WordPress.com and WordPress.org have different log-ins and run different versions of themes with same names. If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

Very helpful, as always, Timethief. Might I jump in with a follow-up question or two about affiliate links?
I have read all the links on advertising and affiliate links but am not sure about this issue: If I receive a request from a third party to add a hyperlink to some text in a post that I have written that will bring people to a site promoting a related product or service, is that allowed?
It is not a banner. It is not in a comment. It is not get rich, porn, gambling, etc. And the primary purpose of my site is most definitely (and clearly) not to drive traffic to such sites.
I do use Word Ads, turning them on for a while and then off, and have made some money doing so. But I am very curious to know about these occasional requests that I receive.
Many thanks for any input.

Hi John,
If I receive a request from a third party to add a hyperlink to some text in a post that I have written that will bring people to a site promoting a related product or service, is that allowed?
This would be allowed as it would be considered Sponsored Content:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/sponsored-posts/
However, if the hyperlink provided contains some advertising codes, the link may be automatically stripped. I’d recommend using a standard URL to a public site, not one filtered by advertising or pay-per-click programs.

Hi Alex,
Thank you for the clarification. I had asked because, several years ago, I had inserted just such a link (no code, just a standard URL) in one of my posts and WP contacted me and told me that it was not allowed.
But I know that policies evolve and the different articles that I had read from WP led me to believe that this might now be allowed.
Thank you for the confirmation.

Hi John,
You’re absolutely right, policies do change and evolve. In general the situations like you’ve described are now considered a valid form of monetization.
On case-by-case situations our Terms of Service folks will always contact you if anything does arise that’s questionable.
