white and grey default avatar… removable?

  i noticed today that comments on my blog from people who do not have an avatar are now showing up with a default image (white silhouette on grey background).

  i much preferred it when the avatar box remained empty…. the white and grey default avatar is very ugly.

  i feel the answer will probably be no, but is there a way to remove this?
