White text and visual editor changed when writing a new post

  • Unknown's avatar

When I am writing a new post all the writing comes up in white with the HTML showing. I hadn’t done anything different – in fact I was in the middle of writing a post when it happened (I had just saved a draft and went into edit it). I can see the text when I highlight it, but there is no cursor, and obviously not very convenient!

The visual editor also looks wrong – doesn’t have all the buttons, everything is in lowercase. When I publish a post or preview a post it comes out normally.

Whenever I look at the help topics I see answers about changing a “wp-config.php file” but I have no idea what this is! I have also tried checking the whether the box to disable the visual editor is checked, but it isn’t.

Any help would be much appreciated!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I believe you may have clicked the “Toggle Full Screen” icon be operating in what’s called “distraction free wiring mode

To enable Distraction Free Writing mode, click on the Toggle Full Screen button in the toolbar (it’s the second button from the right, in the first row), or use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Shift+G

Nope, doesn’t seem to be. I read the distraction free writing page and it doesn’t say anything about your text disappearing! It also implies that you can escape out of it but this appears on all posts old (when editing) and new. I’ve looked on the support section thanks but couldn’t find an answer.

I read the distraction free writing page and it doesn’t say anything about your text disappearing!

The most common cause of post disappearing is a browser issue. Will you please provide us with some details so we can try to help you?

    1. How are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.

    2. Are you using http:// or https:// see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

3.Which browser and version of it are you using?

    4. Have you tried clearing your browser cache and cookies? http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

    5. Is your browser version up to date? You can upgrade any browser version here.

    http://browsehappy.com/

    6. Do you have third party cookies enabled?

    7. Do you have JavaScript enabled?

    8. Do you have another browser you can try?

    9. You can use this link to see if your Flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not up to date then this is where to download and install the latest version of Flash. http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

    10. Have you had any recent operating system and/or security program updates?
Sometimes operating system and/or security system updates can cause problems so check for known issues.

OK I’ve looked on a different browser on a different computer, I am using Safari 4.1.3 but it works on Internet Explorer 9. On closer inspection, the problem with the visual editor is that it says it is in the visual mode but it is actually on the HTML one but I can’t switch. The post didn’t disappear, sorry wrong word, the text is all white and you can only see it when you highlight it. I haven’t recently done any upgrades.

Please see > Missing Visual Editor and confirm that your Visual editor has not been disabled.

the text is all white and you can only see it when you highlight it.

Have you been copying and pasting text from elsewhere into your posts? It sounds to me like you copied and pasted white text on a Black background from another site into your posts. If that’s the case then you need to enter the HTML editor and remove the code for fonts from it and update the posts.

If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here so you know how to do this correctly in the future. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

No, I said at the beginning it isn’t disabled. I don’t copy and paste I just normally write straight into the box.

    Hi there,
I did see that above but wanted to be sure we covered every base (even twice) before I gave up. You will have to contact Staff. Here’s the link http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/ After you use the searchbox, under the search results, at the bottom of the page there will be a section that says “Have you found the answer to your question?” You can choose either “Yes I found the answer to my question.” or “No I didn’t find the answer to my question and I would like to contact support for help.” The no option will reveal the contact form. Best wishes for a quick fix.
