Whither unrenewed domains?

I intentionally allowed my domain, dialogicmediation.com, to lapse on the assumption that my blog would revert to its original url: dialogicmediation.wordpress.com. This doesn’t seem to have been the case. On entering dialogicmediation.wordpress.com, a window opens up stating:
Phew, the year went by fast! The domain dialogicmediation.com needs to be renewed every year to stay active. If you don’t renew the domain soon, it will be canceled and visitors who come to the web address dialogicmediation.com won’t be able to find your site.
My two questions are:
- why can’t visitors access my site by entering the address, dialogicmediation.wordpress.com?
Do I need to take other steps to cancel dialogicmediation.com, so that visitors can access dialogicmediation.wordpress.comArnold
