Who Are You? A Fifteen Second Rant

  • Unknown's avatar

Who are you to tell me that a haiku, a beautiful, evocative image that transports me to a world of serenity and peace, is a “twelve second read”?

Who are you, to tell me that a photograph, a perfect capture of a bird in flight, is worth only ten seconds?

Who are you, to tell my readers that what I have labored over for two weeks is worth only five minutes of their time?

And who are you, to limit the freedom of writers and readers to engage without pressure or constraint, that a stranger who knows neither of us (or an algorithm, for all that) is capable of judging how long our engagement with one another’s images and words should be?

Shame on you, WordPress. I’d write more, but I’m sure your attention span is limited.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What if it were removed except for longer posts? What do you think? Note: I can’t make promises about changes, but I can make sure to review all the feedback and forward suggestions based on them.

    @designsimply
Please clarify why displaying reading time in the Reader is necessary at all. Who exactly requested is feature be added to the Reader?

Is this another case of the “community at large” ie. the wordpress.ORG users, who use the self hosted free software to make money driving changes that we have to cope with here at wordpress.COM in our Reader?

What I do know is that it was a design decision made thoughtfully with readers in mind. I think one reason might be because some people don’t like the word count either? However, both are just a way to try to set some kind of expectation for how long the content is to try to help set an expectation around what to expect after the next click.

    thoughtfully with readers in mind

Oh really. How could that be?
We wordpress.com bloggers (readers) are consulted about our reading preferences.
There is BETA testing group that we WordPress.COM users can t into here at WordPress.COM
Our developers are not equipped with mind reading abilities.

    Edit to include missing word:
We wordpress.com bloggers (readers) are not consulted …

where is this new time counter displayed and exactly what does it count?

I apologize for the missing words. My vision is horrible today so I’ll log out.

Yes, but readers are still at the heart of decisions.

@timethief, if I can get a beta testing group setup, would you join it?

Years ago my answer would have been an eager yes. Now, absolutely not, is my answer. I stopped actively blogging in both of my public blogs hosted here after the last go round of announced changes produced results that I did not appreciate again.

I renewed domain mapping upgrades on both blogs so the links would note broken, because the site redirect uogarde does not result in internal links being reverted to the original .wordpress.com URLs and I have 7- 8 years of published content. By Thanksgiving I will be history.

I found the hidden handshake for the number (thanks @TT for that – still took a bit to find it) – the best I can think is the number is not all that useful to me – telling me that some average person will need two minutes to read a new post is mostly useless – just got finished with 20 minutes on a “two minute read” – why? well it has to do with following some links back into the history to understand some of the information in the new Post and the concerns raised today with readiness, safety and reliability

    @shoreacres

Agree. This is patronising and intrusive.

Now, absolutely not, is my answer

Okay, I thought because you commented about it that you might be interested. :)

WordPress.org is also a good choice! Both are good.

  • Unknown's avatar

@davidderrick, it’s not meant to be that at all.

  • Unknown's avatar

@designsimply ~ Intentions are beside the point. The new policy either is or isn’t patronising and intrusive: and it is.

  • Unknown's avatar

I am here to listen and to try to help. Intent matters to me.

  • Unknown's avatar

That certainly reminds me of the discussion we had re the new and “improved” editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

We’ve added back the word count.

    Thank you for your feedback!
