Who do i go to?

  • Unknown's avatar

I want to put ads of local businesses on my website (ads that are just pictures possibly linked to their website nothing else) and i need to know who i should talk to about it. We would be charging the business and all profit would be going to my school’s newspaper fund. We currently are receiving little-to-no funding from our school for the newspaper itself and because I have created this website for the newspaper. We have enough funds for one or two more issue (which we will be getting ads to go into the newspaper as well) and then were flat out of luck. So I am trying to figure out who i have to talk to about being aloud to put ads on our website. I dont want to go through support because every time i reply i get a message from a different person and I want to speak to only one person of authority. We currently only have two cameras for our newspaper staff (with there being over 25 people in that class) and they are starting to malfunction. Profits from the picture ads would go to things like that as well as for the paper. Any advice or suggestions?

We are mostly fellow WordPress.com users who answer and ask questions here. The only people who can say whether your project is allowed or not are the staff in support. Occasionally staff looks in if they notice a problem, but yours is not really a support problem. Technical support, I mean. I work for a non-profit, and fund-raising is a lot of work.

So do you mean that posting that ads that are just pictures or pictures with links to a website are okay?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have no idea. I mean you have to take that up with staff. Most folks who answer questions here are just fellow bloggers. Just as powerless as you!

that doesn’t sound okay to me – anything that brings a profit is usually not ok in wp.com (unless it’s they who are profitting, of course). but as 1tess suggests, getting support to clarify that is best.

No, your blog will get deep-sixed really fast that way. I’m quite sure staff will tell you the same thing: blogger-generated paid advertising, whether images or posts or whatever, is not allowed at WordPress.com. The only exception is for VIP blogs, which cost several hundred dollars to set up and, I believe, six hundred dollars a month for hosting IF you are accepted. And you need a minimum of 500,000 hits per month.

    I still say, contact support.
Also there are blogs on wp.com that skirt the issue of advertising.

    Bet me money. BET me.

    No money!!!

But he’s a cute kid. and it never hurts to ask. Usually the sad-story doesn’t get anything for you as a non-profit, but sometimes it does. It doesn’t hurt to ASK WP SUPPORT.

  • “anything that brings a profit is usually not ok in wp.com” – sorry, not true.

We have no problem at all with people making money from their WordPress.com blogs. See here for details.

Our problem is with blogs that are merely advertisements, that are automatically generated, that spam up the tag listings with junk nobody wants to read, that are created en masse, that trick people into scams and dishonest programs, snake oil, shills, or anything that generally subtracts from WordPress.com rather than adding to it.

natesample, I think your needs would best be met by a self-hosted WordPress blog. If you think there’s a good reason it should be on WordPress.com, please contact support.

    And thanks for asking first.

So, I could put ads on raincoaster.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

If you are cute and only if you donate the proceeds to a worthy cause.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m aDORABLE. And very worthy. And I promise to wear my WordPress hoodie to the Drupal Users Group meeting.

  • Unknown's avatar

thanks for the clarification, tellyworth. does that mean the answer to raincoaster’s question could be yes?

rain: do you really have a wordpress hoodie?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, I do. I think I got it for being such a pain in the ass.

  • Raincoaster: if you’re selling a book that you wrote, stuff you made on Esty, or something along those lines, then sure, you can advertise that. Original book reviews with Amazon affiliate links are fine also, or the equivalent with other reputable stores.

Worst case if someone with a real blog is doing the above in an obnoxious way that’s drawing complaints or detracting from tag listings, we’ll bump them from tags and/or ask them to knock it off.

Banner ads, sponsored/paid posts or links, copied reviews, cut-and-paste reviews, private label content, multiple/shill blogs, attempts to manipulate tags/search to maximize conversion rates, MLM, get rich quick, etc are all verboten because they drown out the good blogs in a torrent of poor quality content that nobody actually wants to read. It’s about volume, quality and consent. Not because they make a profit.

So, you think I can get my money back on this John Chow e-book then?

  • Unknown's avatar

    tellyworth,
So, the original poster will hear from you about how and what he can post to get donations from their local businesses to fund their program
And I get no money from raincoaster.
A tote bag with wp logo would be nice.

You know, if it’s really a school newspaper, they should be entirely online. I work for two agencies that used to produce a newspaper and have gone online, only to see readership expand and costs plummet.
