The New Sharing Options Thread

    Absolutely LOVE this sharing service… thank you!

    One issue I am having:
    While using the Gallery category on the Twenty-Ten theme, on the index page the ‘share this’ and the share buttons do not display correctly on the Gallery post. It works ok once the post itself is clicked.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    The email sent by the email sharing button includes a link for the recipient to click if they want to subscribe to the blog. That link is a string of code that reveals the blog’s email address — info that is supposed to be kept private. Unless WP changes that, I’m going to be very reluctant to put that handy dandy email button on my blog. Or did that code only show because I sent the email to myself? Anyone know?

    Oops, nvm. That email address is the recipient’s address.

    I suggest to add a sentence in the sharing instructions that not all options are available for private blogs. At least that’s how it seems – I couldn’t figure out why I can see all buttons in one blog and only two (print and email) in another. The second one was private. Then I changed privacy settings and – voila – they appeared :-). It made me think a lot!
    So it might make life of some people a bit easier if you added this information with instructions.

  • Markel, by “Page View Share” I mean a button that displays the number of hits or page views that particular post has received.

    Since this isn’t tied to a sharing service, it doesn’t seem like it’s a “Sharing” option. What I will do is take down the suggestion and we’ll keep it in mind.

    The options for disabling the sharing options do not seem to appear for pages. It works perfectly for posts but the option to remove them isn’t there for pages.

    I checked and this appears to be true; I’ll ask a few questions and see what’s up.

    Got all my share buttons up and running but am clueless (despite the instructions) about how to add more — like delicious, buzz, and technorati. I have no idea where to get the info (sharing and icon URLs) to put in to add each one. It would be a huge assist if WP would either list the appropriate info for all these other buttons, or better, just add them to the group of drag-and-drop buttons already provided.

    We tried to limit the selection of services available for the launch to make sure we had covered the most popular services and to not overwhelm people with a gazillion options (there are a lot of sharing services out there!).

    A list of everything to do would be super-exhaustive and hard to navigate. In general, each service has a link format that it’s looking for. All you need to do is find that link format and then replicate it in the form. The Google Buzz format was listed above, and is:

    http://www.google.com/buzz/post?url=%post_url%

    To show how they can be different, if you want to add FriendFeed, it looks like this:

    http://www.friendfeed.com/share?title=%post_title%&link=%post_url%

    As we see more use of the custom feature, we’ll be considering if there are additional networks we should add to the pre-configured ones.

    While using the Gallery category on the Twenty-Ten theme, on the index page the ‘share this’ and the share buttons do not display correctly on the Gallery post. It works ok once the post itself is clicked.

    I just checked on my own site and I see what you mean. I’ll check on this further.

    Oops, nvm. That email address is the recipient’s address.

    :)

    We wanted to give people who receive sharing emails from your blogs a quick way to subscribe to them by email so they can read more if they’re interested.

    I suggest to add a sentence in the sharing instructions that not all options are available for private blogs.

    We’ll see if this can be made more readily apparent.

    Great feature, thanks to the WP team. Someone above asked about CSS; if I have custom CSS enabled, can I edit the appearance of the text links (font size, spacing, padding, etc.)?

  • From another thread:

    Will there be a way soon to entirely disable?

    You can disable Sharing site-wide by removing the services from the Active area in Settings > Sharing. If there are no services in the list, the Sharing controls will not appear.

    ALL my checkboxes are unticked and yet the share buttons (which I want only on text posts) are appearing on all posts. Can you help please?

    “We’re looking into this”

    Have you had any thoughts about the problem? Best, Kate

  • Have you had any thoughts about the problem?

    Can you please check this again? I just did a look on my test blog with the theme you are using and the settings appear to be functioning properly now.

  • Someone above asked about CSS; if I have custom CSS enabled, can I edit the appearance of the text links (font size, spacing, padding, etc.)?

    Yup.

    There’s both a generic selector and a specific selector for each sharing icon. For instance, if you want to make your text loud and obnoxious for all of the buttons, you could use:

    a.share-icon {
        font-size: 32px;
    }

    Or, for instance, if you wanted to do this only for the Email share text, you could do this:

    a.share-email {
        font-size: 32px;
    }

    A quick glance at your page source should reveal for you the selectors necessary to change the properties of the link text for anything else.

    In addition, the icons for the various services that are built-in to the Sharing features are controlled using CSS background properties. You can thus change the icons used with a few declarations of your own.

    Yes but it makes so much sense to be included there. OK, on second thoughts, I think page views or more appropriately “post views” can be and should be on its own and allow users to position it on any of the top/bottom corners of the post.

    Yes, checked again and it is working fine now. Thanks for your help.

    One last thing: is it possible to have the Twitter button without the Tweet number – mine are so low or non-existent and I don’t want to advertise my failure/shame!

    Without “failure or shame” there’s no success or pride. Your numbers can only go UP from this point onwards :D

    This is one of the most encouraging things I’ve read all day. Nice. :)

    The count is only a function of the “smart” button for Twitter. If you switch that off, the count will not appear.

    Hi markel!

    I love this new sharing feature as it does away with copy-pasting html an code after every post for bookmarking/sharing options. Thanks very much!

    Fortunately, I am able to understand the process of creating a new service. However, I have run across some problems, specifically on the sharing service, Delicious.

    For the service URL, I entered the following:

    http://www.delicious.com/save?title=%post_title%&link=%post_url%

    The URL does redirect to the Delicious site; however, it displays a page where the user is prompted to enter a URL, presumably, the URL of the post being shared. I find this being bothersome for the reader to have to go back and copy-paste the post URL.

    Isn’t there a more comprehensive URL for creating a new service (that of Delicious) that redirects the reader immediately to the posting/sharing page without having to type or copy-paste the URL and title of any post being shared? As for instance, the page redirected to by the following URLs:

    http://www.google.com/buzz/post?url=%post_url%

    http://www.friendfeed.com/share?title=%post_title%&link=%post_url%

    Thanks very much and hoping for your response!

    Cheers!

    I just got done working with this myself tonight.

    Testing it again, I’m able to get it to work with this structure:

    http://delicious.com/save?url=%post_url%&title=%post_title%

    Give that a shot and see how it works.

    Hey markel!

    Wow! It works! I should’ve figured all it took was just a simple change in structure. :P

    Thanks very much for your help!

    Cheers!
