Who is my host and what is their affiliate link?
-
Hi, my website is TeamUV.org and I am VERY much so a novice with respect to WordPress/having my own website. I created my website through WordPress.com and the only think I paid for was the $18(?)/yr to have my website name not include “WordPress”.
Recently I received a post comment that said in part “…your internet site loads up fast! What host are you employing? Can I get your affiliate link to your host?…”.
My knowledge was exhausted the second they uttered the word “host”. From what I gather from internet searches, my host is Automattic through WordPress according to http://www.whoishostingthis.com/. Is this correct? Also, what in the world is an affiliate link and how can I get this for this reader?
Please reply ASAP as I do not want to keep this reader waiting too long. Thank you in advance for your time.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Brian,
We are your host – WordPress.com! Just a note, that comment is spam. I know it may not seem like it, but it is indeed spam. You can normally tell if it’s spam if the content of the comment is not specific to the post you are writing about. A lot of times they will be extremely vague like “I love your website site on the internet!” or “Enjoyed reading this site!”.
If you see the words SEO, free samples, etc. that would be the first sign that it’s most likely spam.
Please mark those back as spam because Akismet (our spam blockers) is a learning engine. It will remember your choice in marking comments as spam/not spam. Since you unspammed these comments, these will continue.
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Bummer. Thank you for the quick reply. For future reference with regards to the affiliate link…do they just mean “wordpress.com” or ?
Thank you for your time

Also, is there any danger associated with accidentally approving the spam comments? And what’s the point of these marketing sites sending out this spam that does not have any advertising in it or anything like that?
Thank you for your time

Affiliate links are used to record the traffic that is sent to the advertiser’s website. Most reputable affiliate links are welcome on WordPress.com; however, there are some restrictions. Please view them here:

There is no harm, it’s just probably not what you want to see when you are going through your comments as they are not genuine.
And what’s the point of these marketing sites sending out this spam that does not have any advertising in it or anything like that?
They very well may be trying to drive traffic to their sites, which could lead to monetary gain – I’m not 100% sure. I’m thinking if you spam millions of sites, there’s a likely chance that at least a small percentage of that will click into their site. We do our best to catch this. :)
