WHOIS Directory Search

I have an issue that I was hoping someone could help me with.
There is a long-dormant wordpress.com site — its last entry was many years ago — which has some content that I’d like to get the rights to. (It’s related to an indie film project that I’m currently working on.)
Unfortunately, there are no contact details within the site itself.
In addition, because the site’s address is what I think is termed a free sub-domain address (e.g., ‘asitethatnowexists.wordpress.com’), I don’t know how to properly conduct a WHOIS directory search to possibly obtain the contact details of the person who set up the site. For example, when I try to enter the site’s address into the search function provided for in the WordPress.com support page at https://whois.sawbuck.com, an error message is always received.
Therefore, could someone please suggest what would be the best way to contact the site’s owner? For example, is there a different method that I can use to conduct a WHOIS directory search?
As a novice user of WordPress.com, I realize that my questions might come across as naive, so thanks to all for both your patience and any guidance that you might be able to give. -
Hi! We don’t give out contact information for site, but if you’ll add a comment on the site that will usually notify the site owner.
Simply commenting and saying “I’d like permission to use this work. Can you get in touch?” will likely do if they’re monitoring the email address we have.

__________Unfortunately, after a week’s time, I have yet to receive a reply from the site’s owner.
I am also unsure as to the status of the comment itself. Upon sending the comment, the comment was initially placed underneath the post with a message that stated “Your comment is awaiting moderation”. When I recently checked the site, however, my comment was no longer under the post.
Could you please provide guidance as to what the removal of my comment could mean? As you can see above, I do not think that it was worded inappropriately.
Perhaps the site’s owner, after reviewing the comment, chose to disregard my request and removed the comment from underneath the post? Or perhaps WordPress intervened for some reason? Any feedback here would be most welcome.
Most importantly, could you please suggest what would now be the best way to contact the site’s owner as my attempt to send a comment to them seems to have been unsuccessful?

The comment has most likely been moderated by the website owner – We would seldom intervene in these matters.
To contact them, you should seek out contact information from the website itself.

Unfortunately, as I pointed out in my original post to this forum, there are no contact details within the site itself. So I don’t really know what else I can do.
Perhaps WordPress can lend a hand?
