Could you mention exactly what the error says? Does it say “HTTP Error” or does it have any additional info?
If it’s the “HTTP Error” then there could be a few reasons it’s not working. One is that the images files themselves are corrupt or sometimes they’re the wrong file type and have been renamed with an image file extension. I’ve seen that happen very rarely. To rule out the images as an issue, you could download one of the PNG files from http://wordpress.org/about/logos/ and then upload that to Media > Add New in your dashboard. That would help to rule out the images themselves as a trouble.
Give the logo upload a test first and then we can go from there.
Note that another possibility is that settings either on your computer or current network are blocking your computer from connecting with WordPress.com image servers for some reason. A quick way to get around that would be to try from another location, or send the pictures to a friend or family member in another location, and try it from there. That would help rule out local network or computer settings as the cause of the trouble.
At your own computer, a few other things you can try are
* clear your browser cache and cookies
* try from a few different browsers
* try temporarily uninstalling browser add-ons (if you have any) as they can sometimes interfere in weird ways
