Why am I getting an SSL error related to Google Maps API key

  • Unknown's avatar

When I try to edit or update a page?

It doesn’t seem to be affecting my ability to edit pages… but it’s weird and disturbing.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The error is apparently, related to my inability to use Google Maps over SSL. (I use SSL on my admin page.) Still unclear on what Google Maps has to do with WordPress.com.

I’m having that problem today as well. I haven’t had it in the past, whether posting via my blackberry or via the web. Whenever I try and submit a post, the very same “google maps API can’t be sent over SSL” error pops up.

I just started getting this error whenever I edit or update a page too. I have no idea what SSL is, nor whether or not I’m using it. Edits/updates yesterday did not have this error message. The exact message I get is:
“The Google Maps API server rejected your request because you do not have permission to use this service over SSL”

I’m using Firefox 3.6, and do not have geolocation turned on for my WordPress blogs.

Other info that may help: I installed the latest Adobe AIR app yesterday when reminded by Adobe to do so, and this morning I installed the latest Flash upgrade. I have no idea whether these installations made any difference or not.

i have the same problem. it just started about 30 or 40 minutes ago for me.

I’m using Firefox 3.5.9 and no geo-anything on my blog. I took at look at you 2’s blogs and didn’t see any similarities such as same theme or 3rd party connections/widgets that could be blamed. I know Twitter is doing some major update/overhaul regarding geolocation or geotagging and I do have tweets on my blog, but I didn’t see it in yours so that blew my theory out of the water. LOL

Other than through the web, do either of you also post thru other means, such as via email,a smartphone app, etc.? If so, maybe WP is confused about us accessing from more than one location/browser…?

I’m at a loss at the moment… Hope we get a response soon!

FYI – I’ve gone ahead and submitted the issue to WP Support and got their automated response for now:

“Thank you! Your bits are flying through cyberspace towards us as you read this. We’ll get back to you ASAP.”

    I’ll post their fix/response if I get one….

I don’t link to my Twitter updates, and I don’t have a smartphone of any description. I only post via the WordPress.com interface, through Firefox — not via email or Word or any other text editing app that might link to WP.

I’m also getting it and am on Firefox 3.5.9. I DO have twitter linked through to my wordpress page…and I only post through my computer/firefox never via app or remotely.

I DO have a test version of google adsense running on my page via Worpdress’s pilot program…that’s the only thing remotely google related that I can think of but I don’t know why that would affect saving posts or opening my dashboard…are any of you also in that pilot program?

  • Unknown's avatar

@1979semifinalist – I’m not part of the pilot program, not as far as I know anyway. I do have Twitter on my blog, but I didn’t see it in the other blogs of those who had the same error… I use the WordPress app on my Blackberry to post from time to time, but it hasn’t given me the error message; only when I’m posting via Firefox. I just tried to edit a post using IE 8.0.6001 and got the same error, so it must be an issue on WP’s end.

Strictly IE8. Glad to see this is showing up somewhere else. Before it happened IE locked up, start wouldn’t work and I had to manually turn off the computer. Black screen restart turned up. SSL notice appeared.

Same error here, Firefox 3.6.3. Bunch of Microsoft updates today. After reboot started picking up firewall error on a google update.temp. Google released a bunch of add on updates today. I never linked the Google Maps API to my word press blog.

I too am getting the error message, on Mozilla, with no twitter access. It doesn’t seem to interfere but it is annoying. Has anyone heard from admin yet?

  • Unknown's avatar

Just to make sure, tried with firewall off, error remains.

Same with me on Add New Post and any editing of previous posts. Am using Firefox and Twitter but no mapping or geolocation anywhere.

Sent a message to Support as well.

Same deal here.. Firefox. No special changes. Just started happening 5 mins ago. I am in the SF Bay area.

I suspect a WP “behind the scenes” “upgrade”, as I have seen a few other oddities last 36 hours.. such as published jpeg’s vanishing from my Media (hours later) and resultant broken links, in my editor, not when viewed online. However, if you click on the image, a 404 error is displayed.

I’m also getting this error message. Also using Firefox. SO glad I checked in here.

    Just as magically.. vanished.

    For how long?

  • Unknown's avatar

Not gone for me. I’m in Western Australia, in case it makes any difference.

I’ve been getting the error for the last hour. :(
