Why am I getting contacted by phone about my blog?
-
I am receiving phone calls about my new blog. I have an anonymous domain listing. (I’ve checked; it isn’t listed under my name). I have an unlisted phone number. So, why am I receiving search engine optimization calls about my blog? Is there a privacy setting that I don’t have marked somewhere?

That’s rather strange — are you sure these calls pertain to your domain, catholicbohemian.com?
-
I can’t be certain. I didn’t get today’s (my husband did, and it was a prerecorded message about “my new website”). Yesterday’s was also a prerecorded message wanting me to go to some website with “search” in it’s name. (I’ll pay more attention if I receive another call.) But, the only site I’ve started recently is the Catholic Bohemian one. And, with an unlisted number, we rarely receive random telemarketing calls.

More than likely, they’re looking up your domain ownership information. By law, this needs to be made public via a WHOIS search.
You can fix this by making your domain private via Store -> Domains in your blog’s Dashboard.
This does cost an additional fee, but it elects a proxy to legally hold your domain, thus displaying their information rather than yours.

I’ve already paid for the proxy domain. My domain ownership shows as “WILD WEST DOMAINS, LLC”. That’s why this is so weird.

I purchased them at the same time. This is how it is shown on my e-mail from WordPress:
Your WordPress.com Upgrades were purchased successfully.
Item: Domain Registration – catholicbohemian.com mapped to http://catholicbohemian.wordpress.com
Cost: $17Item: Private Registration for http://catholicbohemian.wordpress.com
Cost: $8 -
In that case, I’m not sure how your phone number was released. We never release information on our users, with the exception of required domain ownership info when private registration is not selected, so you might want to ask the next person who calls.

The company turned out to be searchenginestartup.com. At the end of the message there was a button to push to be put on the do not call list. I did. Hopefully, they won’t call again.

Okay, glad to hear you were able to get to the bottom of those calls. Let us know if we can help with anything else.

Evarlese,
Thank you for the help. Though I did find out who was calling and (hopefully) have put a stop to it, it remains unclear how they got my unlisted phone number, etc. It would be nice if that mystery were solved someday.
