Why am I getting followers after I purchase a sites redirect?

  • Unknown's avatar

I continue to get followers after I redirected my site. Why is that? And, are they really getting emails when I publish on the new site? Thank you so much, in advance.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Aliza,

To answer your question, no, the new WordPress.com subscribers are not being notified when you post new items to your blog. The reason is that these followers are actually following your blog worthingtonpost.wordpress.com, not patheos.com/blogs/theworthingtonpost.

The Site Redirect appears to be working correctly and your WordPress.com blog has 0 views since January 31st, so visitors are not going to your old blog. They’re being redirected to your new blog. There are a few explanations as to how you’re still getting followers at your WordPress.com blog:

    • Previous followers are reblogging your old content. Then, without going to your site, viewers could follow your old blog from the WordPress.com Reader
    • Readers could be manually entering your blog address into the WordPress.com reader and following your blog that way.

Unfortunately, there’s really no way to prevent readers from manually following your WordPress.com blog. One potential solution would be to connect your new blog to WordPress.com using the Jetpack plugin. I could then transfer your current subscribers to your new blog so they receive new posts through their Reader. Does that make sense?

Let me know if you need anything else!

That makes as much sense to me as one would expect a techno-moron like me to understand. :-)

Thanks very much for your detailed response – I knew the redirect was working and that I had no page views since then, so I was confused about why/how I was getting new followers.

Anyhow, I’d love not to lose the followers in the re-direct, so how do I use the Jetpack plugin? Is it something I purchase?

    Hey Aliza,

No – Jetpack is a free plugin we offer for self-hosted blogs. You can find details on how to set it up here:

    http://jetpack.me/support/getting-started-with-jetpack/

Once you have installed the plugin, you can connect it to your WordPress.com account. Just let me know when you’re finished with this step, and I’ll transfer your followers over!

Let me know if you run into any trouble or issues!

Well, I’m afraid there is no “Plug-ins” in the left panel in the dashboard. I think (I know, it’s pathetic I don’t KNOW) my blog is self-hosted. I also don’t know how to tell if I’m running the latest version of WP. Apologies, again, for my lack of techno-knowledge.

    Hi Aliza,

I apologize; it doesn’t look like patheos.com is run on WordPress software meaning you will not be able to install plugins. This also means that I will not be able to transfer your followers to your new blog. I’m sorry! That would only work if you were running on WordPress.org software and could install the JetPack plugin.

    Hey Aliza,

Sorry! I was looking at the wrong admin URL. The reason you currently cannot access the plugin menu is likely because you may not have the right permissions on the blog. If the owner of the blog added you as an author, not administrator, you wouldn’t be able access the plugins menu. Also, I just realized this might not be an effective solution. If I transfer the followers from your WordPress.com blog to patheos.com, they will be notified of every Patheos article, not just those from The Worthington Post subsection. Currently, there’s no way to assign them only to one part of the blog. Does that make sense?

Actually, the tech wizard at Patheos just installed Jetpack for me…I relayed to her your concerns about not being able to just receive updates from ONLY my blog, and I’m waiting to hear back from her. I will keep you posted! Thanks again for sticking with me, here…

Not a problem! Yes, let me know concerning the subscribers. I’m happy to transfer them. Just want to make sure they receiving the content they signed up for!

    Hi, Jeremy,

I’m not sure why subscribers would receive anything other than my blog. The Tech Wiz at Patheos said to tell you Jetpack is installed, and I am an administrator on my blog.

    What’s next?

    Hi Aliza,

I apologize again for the oversight. It looks like The Worthington Post is set-up as a separate blog than Patheos so subscribers should only receive your posts. Before I make the transfer, there are a few things to iron out with the Jetpack connection:

    1. Your running an older version of Jetpack and of WordPress.org software. Currently, the versions are as follows;

    Jetpack: 2.3.1 (Current version: 2.8)
    WordPress.org: 3.4 (Current version: 3.8)

Can you ask the Tech Wiz at Patheos to update those to the latest (or at least close to latest) versions?

    2. Cloudfront is actively blocking xmlrpc.php. In order for Jetpack to work correctly, Cloudfront will either need to be disabled or configured to allow xmlrpc.php access.

    3. In the DNS settings for patheos.com (http://www.intodns.com/patheos.com), there is an error for “Missing nameservers reported by parent”. That will need to be resolved for Jetpack to work correctly.

Please pass this along to the person at Patheos in charge of maintaining/updating the back-end of the site, and let me know if you have any additional questions!
