Why Am I Getting Large Numbers Of Spam Comments?

  • Unknown's avatar

Within the past week or so, my blog has been receiving large numbers of spam comments from very odd email addresses, all responding to other’s who have commented and tagging them. I would hope that the people who are being tagged are not respond back to this spammer.
I emptied them the first time it happened, but this most recent round, I have not, so that the staffers here at WP could take a look at them.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi –

Thanks for getting in touch. Are these coming through as already marked “spam”? If not, it’s best to mark them “spam” to help the filters learn.

Increasing your comment spam filters will also help.

    HI staff-zinnia
The comments that I am referring to are all marked as spam.
All of the above WP support tips on unwanted comments are in place within my blog, other than the blacklisting-I suppose I could black list all .ru emails …
But my question is WHY is this happening? Is it just happen-stance that the outlook emailers are back again on my blog AND the spam comment numbers went through the roof? In the past, I’d get maybe 1 spam comment a month or so…

  • I do think it’s just coincidence. Spam is super annoying and we can totally empathize with you on this – please know that we do our best to limit this behavior in order to provide a nice experience for bloggers.

I would definitely use the blacklisting features. If there’s any trend to the comments, you could add some keywords to that blacklisting as well. This should help, give it a week or so and come back to let me know if the behavior as improved.

I was just hit with over 200 spam comments like that sometime in the last two days. All the comments replied to other comments and all were raves about the content with one word spelled way wrong.

Thankfully the were all caught by the spam filter and not showing on the blog posts.

Looks like someone found a new way around spam filters, temporarily at least.

I never cease to wonder what any of the spammers get out of this. A comment about how insightful the information in the article is on a post that only displays a photo isn’t going to impress anyone.

  • Hi seattleparklover,

If those spam comments were caught by our filters then there’s no reason to worry as this is proof that the anti-spam system works :)

Please let us know if you continue to receive those spam comments in the future.

Yeah, I wasn’t worried or anything. It was just so bizarre to get such a huge number. No new ones since I deleted them all yesterday.

  • Spammers gonna spam, right? We’ll keep working to catch them.

As long as they are being caught, everything is working fine.

If you’re getting too many uncaught spams, or too many false positives, let us know. :)

That’s a good thing that these spam-commenters are being caught in the fly trap…

But still my question remains unanswered:

Why am I getting large numbers of spam comments?

  • Why am I getting large numbers of spam comments?

Spam can fluctuate quite a bit, it’s not uncommon to go through a phase like this. If all of these are coming in to one post, it could be something specific in that post that triggered them.. It’s really hard to know since we aren’t the ones behind the spam, after all, the motives remain mysterious.
