Why am I not getting email notification of follow-up comments?

Whether on my blog or another user’s wordpress.com blog, I am not receiving email notification of follow-up comments. On my blog, I’ll get an email when a user posts their -first- comment on a post. After that, I do not get notification even if I use the check-box.
On other users’ blogs, I never get email notifications of follow-up comments despite clicking the check-box.
I have checked my email spam folder and there is nothing in it. Since I otherwise get emails from my blogs, I feel like there is a setting I’m missing.
Am I missing a setting?

From what I can see, you should be receiving an email notification each time someone posts a comment on your blog. However, in your Dashboard -> Settings -> Discussion page, you currently have your comments configured so that you do not need to approve/moderate comments if the comment author has already posted on your blog.
To change this, simply select “An administrator must always approve the comment” on your Settings -> Discussion page.
You should also be able to check your comment subscriptions by going to http://subscribe.wordpress.com/ If any of your comment subscriptions are missing, would you mind sending me a link to an example post where this is happening?

My comment subscriptions appear to have ceased around June 10, 2010. Which I know that isn’t right because I’ve selected both checkboxes on comments recently. For example, any comments I’ve placed on this blog (which is not mine):

As for comments on my blog, I understand your suggested workaround, but shouldn’t it be that if I choose “Notify me of follow-up comments via email” I should then get an email if there are follow-up comments? Similar for “Notify me of new posts via email”. I am getting neither of those notifications.

You’re right, the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email” should be independent of that Dashboard setting. What email provider are you using?
There was an issue just yesterday where email notifications weren’t using a proper from: address so many services were marking messages as spam and removing them. We’ve sorted that out now but knowing what provider you use will help me look into things.

I am using Verizon. Again, this issue didn’t crop up recently. I’m just finally noticing it enough to ask for help. The last comments I know I received emails for were last year.

The comment notifications for your own blog should be going to the email address in the Settings section of your blog’s Dashboard.
Would you please check the spam folder on that email address just to make sure they aren’t getting lost in there?

Nothing in my spam folder (via web UI). Checked there before, but was worth looking again. Thanks for the idea! Next? :-)

I made sure comment subscriptions are working with the following test steps:
1. Log in to WordPress.com.
2. Go to a WordPress.com post where comments are enabled.
3. Leave a comment and make sure to check the “Notify me of follow-up comments via email” option.
4. Open your blog dashboard and go to Dashboard → Blogs I Follw → Comments.
5. Make sure the comment subscription to the post you just added a comment on is listed.
6. Log out of WordPress.com and log back in as a different user.
7. Leave a new comment reply on the same post.
8. Check the email account for the first user to see if you received a comment notification for the second comment.Result: I was able to subscribe to comments and receive new comment notifications for future comments left on the post.
I checked the comment subscriptions in your account by going to Dashboard → Blogs I Follow → Pending (linked at the top), and I can see your comment subscription for the post titled “The Fox and the Eagle, Chapter 17.” Can you please click the “Confirm” link below all the posts you want to approve subscriptions for on that page? You should receive comment notifications for posts you are subscribed to as long as they are listed on your Dashboard → Blogs I Follow → Comments page.

I believe I have cleared this up by going into my pending subscriptions and approving/clearing all of those. Now with those not blocking things up, it would appear that I am getting emails for follow-up posts from other blogs, etc.
