Why am I not getting new post emails on blogs I follow?
-
Hi Robyn
1 Looks like the comment issue has been resolved. Nothing today. Wonderful. Well done on that one.
2 Only one email address I use
3 “You mentioned that while you're still receiving your weekly emails, there are some posts that are not appearing on your digest email. Have you received them correctly in the past? If so, do you know when these notification stopped working?” Sorry but I don't understand this question because the whole issue is about me NOT receiving the weekly emails!!!!!!!!!
4 “I noticed that your notification settings are now set to receive notifications Immediately,……….” I haven't changed the setting and it doesn't show as changed on my reader. It's exactly the same.
5 “Finally, if you visit your Reader at WordPress.com, do you see posts from all the sites to which you've subscribed? Or, are there omissions?” I don't know the answer to this because I only get what I get from WP. I would only know for sure if someone has written a post if I visited every site every day. Hence the reason for readers I assume, to save time.
Thanks a lot for flogging away at this conundrum.
regards
James

Hi James!
I’m so glad Robyn was able to get your comment notifications turned off. She’s off for a couple of days while she moves, so I’m going to step in and pick up where she left off.
the whole issue is about me NOT receiving the weekly emails!
Just to clarify, you’re not receiving the weekly digest emails at all for any site other than TTC? We were a little confused, we thought you were getting some or most of the actual emails, but that some of the published posts were missing from the content.
Can you give me a link to TTC so I can check their settings and compare it to your other sites that you’re not getting emails from?
I see that email digests went out for these sites this morning. Can you confirm whether you got digests from any of them:
- Andy: Photographer, Traveller & Chef
- Bucket List Publications
- EdMooneyPhotography
- leaf and twig
- Leanne Cole PHOTOGRAPHY
- Listful Thinking
- My Bag of Pixels
- perkingthepansies
- The Daily Post
- The Displaced Nation
Thanks for your patience while we get to the bottom of this.
-
Hi Shawna.
I'm sorry you are confused. I can't understand why as Robyn and I have been communicating on this for a while now.
I only got Perking the Pansies today. None of the others.
Yesterday I got TTP and Becky Scahde.
It seems I am getting notifications from those which are all NON-Wordpress sites:
TTP http://traveltipsandpictures.com/ , Perking the Pansies, BeluChi, Becky Schade.I only occassionally get WP sites emails.

James

Thanks for that information! It’s very helpful. I’ve checked our systems and we successfully sent 46 weekly digests to your email address yesterday. Since you’re not seeing all of these, you’ll need to contact the support team for your email provider, Gmail.
If you forward emails from the address on file with us to another address of yours and check your emails there, it’s possible that your emails are getting caught in a filter before they’re forwarded on, so you should log directly into the address associated with this account.
I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful, but let me know if you have any other questions about this!

Hi Shawna.
I don't understand what this means:
“If you forward emails from the address on file with us to another address of yours and check your emails there, it's possible that your emails are getting caught in a filter before they're forwarded on, so you should log directly into the address associated with this account.”
I only have one email address (this one)
We seem to have gone full circle as you are now saying exactly what Robyn said right at the beginning.
WordPress is sending weekly digest emails to me but I have not received any of the 46 emails you refer to.
So are you now saying that it is Gmail's fault because they are not sending me the WordPress weekly digest emails?
If so that seems very strange because I have never had a problem with receiving any Gmail's before and as far as I know they are sending me emails from everyone else except WordPress.
I have been through all their help stuff and checked all the settings and possible places they could be and I can see nothing wrong.
Are you sure Gmail are receiving them because you only say you sent them and not that you can verify receipt by them?
In the meantime I will have to discipline myself to check my reader every day or so.
regards
James

Hi there!
If you only have one email address then that scenario won’t apply to you. No worries!
Unfortunately, once we’ve successfully sent the email, we can’t really tell why it doesn’t make it to your inbox. Anything that happens after we send the email would have to be debugged through the receiving servers, Gmail’s. I know this is frustrating, but on our end we don’t see any errors.
I have also subscribed to a few of the sites you aren’t getting emails from and set my emails to arrive at the same time as yours. However, I won’t be able to see whether I get those emails until Monday.
I’ve subscribed to these three sites:
I’ll let you know if I also don’t receive the emails from these sites. If that happens, then I can do some more digging around the content of the emails themselves. However, if I do receive the emails, you’ll need to contact Gmail about this issue.
-
Thanks Shawna.
Are you are saying that Gmail can't confirm if they receive any emails sent by WordPress?

James

Hi Shawna
I didn't receive a reply from my last email and now I am still not getting weekly digest emails as requested but am getting comment emails all the time which I specifically requested NOT.
So it cannot be Gmail's fault as you suggested.
Please respond

Hi there!
Sorry for the delay. I was hunting down some information about the digests that I received.
There isn’t anything wrong on our end with the sending of these digests. I got digests from both International Bellhop Travel Magazine and backpackerlee. The third site Sweet Pickles & Corn did not post during the week, so I did not receive a digest from them.
Basically, sending emails works similarly to the USPS. We address and send the emails. However, we can’t confirm what Gmail does with them once they receive them. I understand that its frustrating to hear, however there’s nothing left to debug on our end. Everything that we have control over is happening correctly. You’ll need to contact Gmail about the missing emails.
As for the additional comment emails, I can help you get unsubscribed from those. Can you tell me what sites or posts you’re getting the emails from and I can take a look?
-
Hi Shawna.
You may have got digest emails from International Bellhop Travel Magazine and backpackerlee but I didn't
I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW HOW MANY YOU GOT FROM 'BACKPACKERLEE' BECAUSE HE PUBLISHED MORE THAN 12 POSTS IN THE LAST WEEK.
I have now accepted that I will only occasionally will get a digest email so must check my reader all the time. I can live with this
But the comment emails are a pain. I get them from many sites daily. This morning I have only had 2 'One and the same' and '50 shades of me'
Please sort these out for me and I won't bother you again. Promise.
Obviously someone has it in for me.

James

Hi James,
I understand that this is frustrating. My point about myself getting these emails was merely to demonstrate that there is no issue with our system in sending out digests from these sources. You should really contact Gmail about these missing emails.
I’ve removed your comment subscriptions for One and The Same and 50 Shades of Me. It looks like you subscribed to these on August 14 and August 23 respectively.
You can also unsubscribe from these comment subscription via the unsubscribe links in the footers of the emails you receive. And you can edit your blog and comment subscriptions here:
I hope this helps!
-
Hi Shawna
You say “……you can edit your blog and comment subscriptions here:
https://subscribe.wordpress.com/”
Am I missing something?
That is exactly what I have been doing since the start but it doesn't work!!!!!!!!
You also say “I've removed your comment subscriptions for One and The Same and 50 Shades of Me.”
So have you fixed it for all the others like you said you would?

James

I’m not sure which others you refer to. If you’d like to unsubscribe from all comments on all sites, you can do that by selecting “Comments” in the upper right corner of subscribe.wordpress.com. Or by following this direct link:
Or you can let me know which ones you’d like to remove and I can do it for you again.
-
Hi Shawna
Have you forgotten you told me you were able to stop the comment emails which I keep getting but have requested not to.
I do not subscribe for comments so I am referring to all the 64 blogs I follow.
They are all marked, as they have always been 'You get weekly post emails and no comment emails for this blog'
But I have followed your instructions and un-subscribed again so let's see what happens.
Regards
Jim

Hi James
Sorry that I misunderstood. I thought there were specific sites you wanted to unsubscribe from comment emails, not all of them.
I took a look and you’ve subscribed to two more comment threads today. I’ve unsubscribed you from these. And I think I’ve figured out what’s happening.
When you leave a comment on a post or page, there are two checkboxes that are displayed:
It sounds like you’re checking the box for “Notify me of follow-up comments via email.” This check box subscribes you to comments for the entire thread, not just direct responses to your own comment.
I hope this clarifies why you’re continually getting subscribed to comment emails.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else!
-
Well spotted Shawna.
So 'Notify me of follow-up comments via email” doesn't mean what it says at all. It means 'Notify me of all comments to this post'.
I bet I'm not the only one confused by the bad English.
Can you perhaps suggest to WP that they change this to help the other users who won't know what I now know.
Do I take it then that if I want to know if there is a response to my comments only it is not possible?
If so that is very disappointing because we all want to know that. Don't we? But we don't necessarily want to be bombarded with thousands of comments that are of no interest.
You also say. “I took a look and you've subscribed to two more comment threads today.' That's wierd because once again I specifically set them to no comment emails!!!! So it seems it is still not working.

I’m more than happy to pass along your feedback. I agree that it could be worded more clearly.
If you check that box, it will override your site-wide settings at https://wordpress.com/following/edit/. This allows you to subscribe to comments on only specific posts, rather than all posts and pages on a site. Let me know if you have further questions about that!
-
And we’ve deployed a change! The checkbox now says “Notify me of new comments via email.”
Let me know if I can help with anything else!
-
Thanks a lot Shawna.
I'm sure WP will listen to you.
But WOW!! Now you are confusing me again.
You say “If you check that box….”. Which box do you mean?
I don't want to override my settings!!!! Do I?
And I certainly don't want to be restricted to commenting only on specific posts. I want to be able to comment on any post like I can now.
regards
James
