Why am I not getting new post emails on blogs I follow?

Sorry for that confusion James! You can comment on any post you want, just make sure you don’t check off either of those check boxes in the comment form.
The setting you keep mentioning, where you’ve set yourself to not receive comment emails, is meant as an overarching setting for the site. However, you can still subscribe to the comments on individual posts by checking the “Notify me of new comments via email.” box before submitting your comment on a post.
I hope that clears things up about why you’re receiving these comment emails even though you’ve set yourself to not receive comment emails from those sites.

I am sorry but I am beginning to think I am really stupid because I really don't understand what you are saying at all now.
Maybe it is better if we go back to the start and let me say what I am trying to do. Then maybe you tell me if it is possible and if it is then how I can do it.
1 I would like to receive weekly emails about new posts for the blogs I follow. [As you know this is not happening and you say it is gmail's fault.]
2 I would like to be able to comment on ANY WP blog that allows comments. [It seems that I can already do this without doing anything]
3 I would like to receive notification emails if anyone responds to MY comments on other blogs. [This happens if I tick the box 'Notify me of follow-up comments by email' when I post a comment]
4 I would like to receive notification emails if anyone comments on MY blogs. [This happens automatically now]
5 I do not want to receive notification emails about other peoples comments to posts on other sites which I have no interest in. [This I have no control over at the moment and as you know I continually get these email notifications from WP]

I promise you’re not stupid. It can be really hard to differentiate the different types of emails and comments we have here, so thanks for laying that all out James.
Since 1, 2, and 4 are currently handled (although I know #1 isn’t perfect), let’s chat about 3 and 5:

There is currently no way to receive notifications for only comments that are in response to your comment. We’ve looked at ways to do this and it’s currently quite complicated. I’ll make sure to add your vote for this feature, but as it’s currently impossible, I believe this is where the confusion occurs.
The check box you mention is the one we’ve changed the language for. It now says “Notify me of new comments via email.” to clarify that you’ll be notified of all comments on that thread not just the ones that are followups to your comment.
