Why am I receiving an inordinate amount of spam comments lately?

  Just over the last couple of weeks, the number of spam comments has skyrocketed. Is there a reason for this sudden influx?

  To put thinks in perspective the majority of al “information” on the inteernet is spam and over 80% of all comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day are spam. It’s my experience that those who have wordpress.org installs have hundreds and even thousands od spam comments every day. Spam comes in waves and the waves are unpredictable. Do note that spam attracts spam. If you see a lot of spam directed at a single post double check every comment your approved as if one of them is a spam comment then other spam is sure to follow.
