Why am I seeing my entire post in dashboard>posts instead of only an except?
-
I am currently running the Gateway theme and in my dashboard I am seeing my entire post instead of an except. I don’t know if this is a function of the theme or if there is a setting I need to change. Thanks for your help.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

https://jlcharacter.wordpress.com seems to be using the Twenty twelve theme.
If you’ve added a “read more” tag have you tried visiting your site to see if the posts are displaying how you wish them to. I’m sure your dashboard is supposed to display the whole post otherwise the rest of the content after the “read more” tag wouldn’t be available?

I am making reference to a different site. The forum automatically entered one of my WP blogs which, like you said, is running twenty-twelve.
I would upload a screenshot for you to look at, but this forum does not seem to allow that.
My problem is that in my dashboard, the whole post text appears instead of just an excerpt. Or nothing at all. If I password protect the post, it does not display the entire post as it would previously.
Is there a max word count for displaying the post text in the dashboard?
Thanks for your help!

I am making reference to a different site.
What is the exact URL starting with http:// of the wordpress.COM hosted site you refer to please?
And, exactly which wordpress.COM username account registered that site?
This is wordpress.COM support. I’m asking because we cannot accurately answer questions posted here until we have confirmed the URL referred to and verified the hosting.
We provide support only for wordpress.COM hosted sites. Our support docs do not apply to
(1) local installs of wordpress.ORG software on your own server or
(2) wordpress.ORG software installs on paid hosting, and we do not provide support for them at wordpress.COM. That support is found at http://wordpress.ORG/support/
Also, note that we do not provide Jetpack support https://jetpack.me/support/ for sites linked to wordpress.COM accounts with the Jetpack plugin so they display on the My Sites wordpress.com account page. -
Here is the site. It is wordpress.COM

Like I said, I’m running Gateway theme.

I can’t recreate the issue you’re reporting. If I password protect a post I can still see the whole post in the dashboard. Perhaps it’s a browser issue that you have.
There is no limit (within reason) to how many words you can put in each post.
As I said earlier I think you’re supposed to see the whole post in the dashboard even if you have inserted a “read more” tag otherwise where would the rest of the post be? This won’t vary between themes.
Your new site only has a few posts and I can’t see any with a “read more” tag anyway. Sorry I can’t help.

Thanks for trying to help.
I will have to research further into how to fix this problem.

I am currently running the Gateway theme and in my dashboard I am seeing my entire post instead of an except.
Do you mean that at My Sites > Blog Posts (https://wordpress.com/posts/my/jlcharacter.wordpress.com) the entire posts display rather than excerpts?

Sorry, I meant to say,
Do you mean that at My Sites > Blog Posts (https://wordpress.com/posts/my/foundationsofreconstruction.wordpress.com) the entire posts display rather than excerpts?

Hi! I think we were all confused a bit by the word “dashboard” here — in WordPress terms that usually means the interface you use to add posts and manage the site.
Do you mean you want the homepage of your site to look like it does on Gateway’s demo, with just excerpts showing instead of the full post?
If so, head on over to the Gateway information page:
https://wordpress.com/theme/gatewayThere are steps for setting up your Homepage there if you scroll past the main image. Let me know if that’s what you were after. Thanks!
