Why are autosaves also saved in revisions? Why isn’t there only one autosave?

I spent a significant amount of time today editing a draft I’ve had saved for weeks. Originally the draft only had a few topics and a few short paragraphs in it, but I figured I’d write the whole post today. To start I cut and pasted the whole thing into a text editor, and then got to doing the post in WordPress. After finishing I accidentally closed my text editor and a few minutes later, realizing I didn’t remember all the topics I had in the original draft, was kind of upset because it was gone.

I thought “No worries, I’ll check out the revisions.” Only the original revision wasn’t there. I had clicked “Save Draft” zero times while typing the post, but each revision was spaced a few minutes apart, leading me to believe they were all autosaves.

So my question is: Why are all of my autosaves listed as revisions? I also use WordPress (the software) on another website and in my wp-config file I have the option of setting the number of revisions saved + 1 autosave. The autosaves always replace one another, leaving the intact revisions alone. Why doesn’t wordpress.com do this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

At WordPress.com, we don’t have an option to configure anything about the autosave function. (WordPress.org is different.)

Well yeah, hence my post. If I could configure it I probably wouldn’t be asking. I’m wondering why it’s set up the way it is.
