Why are deleted website urls unaccessible?

I have a weird attachment to my urls, maybe due to a long history of personal branding. I have to wonder why, if you delete/change a blog name, it disappears into the ether and can never be claimed again. Is it because if it was an active blog, it would mess up redirects?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

We mainly do not recycle blogs due to OpenID support. There are a growing number of sites that can be accessed with an existing WordPress.com account, so recycling usernames and their associated sites could cause potential complications with this system.

We also respect our users’ ownership of their content, and therefore we do not recycle blog names. Our systems are built with the presumption that URLs and usernames are permanent even if they are deleted.

    Hope this helps.
