Why are images in an image gallery in a post not opening in an attachment page?

  When I import my pictures into a post with an image gallery, it will not open the larger image in an attachment page. It will only open the larger image in a image file page. Is this because my theme won’t allow the attachment page, or am I doing something wrong when setting my image gallery and posting a new post?
