Why are my apostrophes and quotation marks in titles turning into question marks
-
Hi,
I have an apostrophe and quotation marks in the titles of several of my daily blog posts, but when they are emails to subscribers, some subscribers are receiving them with question marks in place of the apostrophe and quotation marks. Here’s a sample of several:
This Week?s Sermon- ?And Every Stone Flashed Like A Ruby?
This Day?s Thought from The Ranch- Friday
This Day?s Thought from The Ranch- ThursdayThese should read (and were typed into WordPress to read):
This Week’s Sermon- “And Every Stone Flashed Like A Ruby”
This Day’s Thought from The Ranch- Friday
This Day’s Thought from The Ranch- ThursdayI have experimented trying to type or copy and paste smart quotes, plain quotes and any other type of direct quote I can find, but always get the same result: question marks come out in some of the emails. Is there a way to bypass this (other than removing the apostrophes and quotations altogether, which is difficult as this is in the title of our blog This Day’s Thought.
Thanks!

Hi Eric,
WordPress.com converts straight quotes into smart quotes, and some email clients cannot read that HTML. It’s possible that those readers might have a setting in their email client that they can switch from plain text to HTML.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions!
