Why are my comments closed?
-
Just noticed “Comments are closed” on my last two posts. I’ve no idea why. I didn’t change any settings that I know of. Can’t even find a setting to turn off comments on a per-post basis (but I’m still looking frantically).
Help, please. It pains me to think of the comments I’m missing on posts that are getting a lot of hits.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

P.S. I can add an explanatory comment from the editing screen, but that doesn’t open the comments to anyone else.

That’s very weird.
I see what you mean here:

and here
http://piedtype.com/2013/10/19/this-is-what-idiots-look-like/Please don’t be insulted but have you done the basic settings checks?
All WordPress blogs by default have comments open on all Pages and Posts. You can enable and disable comments on free hosted WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/You can override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/Any existing posts or pages will need to have comments disabled manually via editing. You can use the bulk edit feature in the all posts and all pages screen to make that quicker.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules
P.S. I know you have probably checked everything there is to check, so I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks for your quick response. I found the problem. First, I had inadvertently unchecked “Allow people to post comments on new articles” on the Discussion settings page when I made some changes a few days ago. Rechecking it, however, did not open up the two closed comment sections. For that I had to go to Dashboard > Posts > Quick Edit and check Allow Comments for each of the two affected posts. Or could have done the same with bulk edit.
Which I think is another way of saying I did what you said. Thanks. Emergency over. :)

Hey, we’d both be out of business with our eyes. (But I’m sure glad you were here just now.) Thanks again, and take care of yourself.
