Why are my custom page names being amended with '-2' even though it is unique?

  Hello,

  I recently encountered a problem where if I create a pretty permalink of, for instance, /apples/, it would be amended to /apples-2/. I found in this forum (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/wordpress-adding-2-at-the-end-of-the-url) that it was due to a similarly named page in my trash. I emptied my trash and still cannot rename it /apples/. My permalink setting is Day and Name.

  Is there a way to permanently empty my trash that I am missing?
