Why are my featured images disappearing and why can't I add new ones?

  Since mid-October, I have been have trouble adding featured images to my pages. I can get images to upload, but they don’t insert as featured images. I have even had some disappear that I had previously added. Any thoughts?

  We made a bug fix update to image sizing that makes it so that you must now upload an image with the minimum size requirements in order for the featured image to work.

  Are you using the correct minimum image size requirements for the featured images you are trying to add? Can you point us to a specific example so we can take a closer look?

  What is the minimum image size now required for a featured image? Is there any way to get around that?

  One image that disappeared was on my page entitled Where the Mountains Meet the Moon and the image was a dragon. The image is still in the gallery where I uploaded, but I can’t get it to appear as a feature image . . .

  The size requirement depends on the theme and which featured image option you’re trying to use. Each theme can be different.

  I see that you are using the Pilcrow theme. The custom header dimensions are 770 by 200 for two-column and 990 by 257 for wide layouts.

  I checked this page: http://smallislandschools.wordpress.com/where-the-mountains-meet-the-moon/

  And the featured image you are currently using there is only 500 x 256 pixels but it needs to be 990 x 257 pixels to work on the “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” page. https://smallislandschools.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/dragon2.gif

  So are there any tricks I can use either to get around the minimum size requirement or to increase the pixels so that I can use the featured images that I want.

  When I first started this blog, I could use any sized picture I chose as a featured image . . . I’d like to be able to do that again if possible.

  There is not a way to use any sized picture any more. I’m sorry for the inconvenience!

  You could try editing the images using a graphics program before you upload them as featured images.

  Okay, thanks for the info . . . at least I understand what is happening now.
