Why are my gallery image previews out of proportion?

  I’m using the square tiles galleries as I like the neat overall preview of it. My actual images are rectangles and for some reason the larger square previews are not in proportion, they skew the image instead of simply cropping the top and bottom off. My images should be big enough and also I only started to have this problem when I changed my theme to the Resonar. See what I mean here: http://varpuk.com/collections/

  Also it would be great if I could control the number of columns somehow because if I try to create a gallery of 4 images for example it stretches one massively and crams the rest in one row instead of making them all even, I find this very annoying.

  You’re right the square tile gallery often does “zoom-and-crop” images to fit the square, but with smaller images it will often just skew and that looks to be what’s happening here. I checked Resonar’s code and did some testing as well and don’t see that resonar handles the square tile gallery any differently than the default.

  To ensure that your images are zoom-and-cropped, rather than skewed, I’d recommend re-uploading your images at a width larger than 500 pixels. In my testing I found that all images with widths smaller than 450 pixels were always skewed in the square tile gallery, and I was not able to replicate the skewed issue at all above 500 pixels of width.

  The tiled galleries don’t offer any customization of columns, but you can define the columns used in Thumbnail Grid gallery styles.

  You may prefer to use two separate square tile galleries, with two images in each, to avoid this formatting when 4 images are involved.
