Why are my images appearing larger than the 500 pixels set in the media setting?

    I have had my Blog for five months and all of a sudden my images are appearing larger than the 500 pixels I’ve set in the media setting. I’ve cleared my cache and cookies…still the prob;em. I normally use Firefox…tried on Internet Explorer…still the problem.
    Prior to loading the image into the media file, I’ve downsized it to a max width of 1366 pixels.
    This allows a viewer of my blog to first se the photo at 500 pixels and by double clicking allow the photo to be viewed at 1366 pixels. Everything has been fine for five month…then suuddenly this problem.
