Why are my links dead (404 File Not Found)?
-
I have mp3s and pdf’s uploaded on my site and I’m confused by something. I have a page where ALL the mp3s are archived and the links work fine. AND I have some mp3s separated into different series which are on separate pages. And the same links that work on the archive page DON’T work on the separate page. I have gone through and looked at all the hyperlinks and they’re fine and yet it still takes me to a “404 File Not Found” page. Why is this happening? And what can I do to fix it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here’s an example of a page with the dead links:
These same links work on this page:

If you look at the two links, the one that works and the one that doesn’t, they are different links. Compare the two below.
worksClick to access cultivating-a-high-vision-for-justice-the-coming-of-the-king-and-his-kingdom.pdf
doesn't work http://daltonlifsey.com/select-a-sermon-series/end-times-eschatology/files/2009/06/cultivating-a-high-vision-for-justice-the-coming-of-the-king-and-his-kingdom.pdfWhen you have domain mapping here to your own custom domain, the links to the uploaded files will still retain the old wordpress.com URLs. That is why the second one does not work.

“When you have domain mapping here to your own custom domain, the links to the uploaded files will still retain the old wordpress.com URLs. That is why the second one does not work.”
Can you explain what that means? And how I can make the links work?
-
All of your uploaded file links will start with
http://inearnestexpectation.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/
For the second link that does not work, it starts with
http://daltonlifsey.com/select-a-sermon-series/end-times-eschatology/files/2009/06/
The /YYYY/MM/ will change of course depending on when the files were uploaded, but the base structure of all your links to uploaded files will start with
-
Oh I see what you’re saying. You misunderstood me. I know those links are different. My problem was that one the top page the links on the page worked and on the bottom page the links were dead on that page.
For some reason they are now working after I copied and pasted the links yet again.
For future reference, does anyone have any idea why the same link would work on one page and not on another?
-
What you will have to do is to replace the first part of the links that don’t work,
http://daltonlifsey.com/select-a-sermon-series/end-times-eschatology/files/
with the following
http://inearnestexpectation.files.wordpress.com/
Basically stop on the links that don’t work at the YYYY/MM/
-
The links are different. If you copy the one that doesn’t work and the one that does work out and paste them into a plain text file and compare them you will see what I mean.
-
If I put my cursor on it, the links were the same. Is it possible to read a different link than it is? Because the links were reading the same as they are reading the same now.
-
What I did for the two I pulled out was to just do a search for the first few works in the descriptive text. I just checked again and the one I used as an example seems to now be correct.
Perhaps a glitch in the backend?
