Why are my media (pictures) getting stuck in crunching?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,
When I upload pictures, they go through the %s to 100% and then begin crunching. However, they are getting ‘stuck’ in crunching and never fully uploading. How can I get them through the crunching phase?
I have tried restarting, logging in/out, re-uploading, trying different pictures, and reading through the other questions/answers, but nothing has worked so far.
    Thank you!

Were your pictures eventually uploaded to the Media Library?

Can you please try clearing out your cache? Do you also encounter this issue in a different browser? for example Firefox or Google Chrome?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

Thanks for the response. I have tried clearing the cache and it has not helped the issue. I have also tried uploading pictures in both Explorer and FireFox and both continue to ‘crunch’ without ever completing. I have left it uploading for up to 8 hours and it never completes.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you,

    Laura

What kind of Operating System (e.g: Windows or Mac) are you using? Could you please also try Google Chrome, just to see if this problem is browser related or not.

Thanks for the quick response. I’m traveling in South America at the moment and don’t have good enough internet to download Chrome. I will try Chrome once I’m able to download it and see if it fixes the issue. Thanks!

  • Thanks, please let us know how that goes!

    Hello,
I am unable to download Google Chrome (this is a work computer and Google Chrome is blocked).
Therefore, I am stuck using Mozilla Firefox or Explorer.
I am still having problems with each of these browsers – photos stuck in ‘100%,’ photos stuck in crunching.
I have tried clearing the cookies and cache.
Is there anything else I can do to make Firefox or Explorer start working again?
    Thank you!
    Laura

  • Hm, we have had some issues with work networks blocking essential elements that we need, and the fact that they’re already blocking Chrome leads me to believe that is the case here.

Have you tried from home or a non-work computer?

    Hello,
I am backpacking in South America (hence the blog with pictures) and therefore don’t have regular access to other computers.
I have been traveling and blogging for 5 months without issue. It was only in the past week that Firefox and Explorer started giving me issues with uploading pictures. Is there something that could have happened in just the last week that would have caused this issue?
    Thank you,
    Laura

  • Do you have any luck if you check or uncheck “Always use HTTPS when visiting administration pages” at Users -> Personal Settings in your blog’s Dashboard?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi Again,

OK, so I have tried checking the HTTPS, using google chrome, and using a different computer. The pictures still get stuck in 100% or crunching with each of these different fixes.

Still can’t get my pictures uploaded. Any other ideas? This has been going on for a while now and I’m getting behind!

    Thank you, Laura

  • Ok, two more things to try.

    1. Try uploading will all browser extensions or add-ons disabled.

    2. Try uploading with any firewalls or security software temporarily disabled.

    Hi Again,
Thanks for the tips. I tried both the above – temporarily disabling browser extensions & add-ons and temporarily disabling firewalls and security software. These didn’t work either. Any other ideas?
    Thank you,
    Laura

  • Hm, ok then.

When you upload, there’s a link offering to try the Browser Uploader instead.

    Would you please try that?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

Yes, I’ve been trying both the browser upload and the multiple uploader continuously. No luck with the browser upload either (actually, even less luck with the browser upload – oftentimes doesn’t even let me choose a picture).

Sorry to keep asking – but any other ideas?!

    Laura

  • Both Firefox and Explorer won’t let you select the file to upload when using the Browser Uploader?

If so, there is definitely something on your computer interfering with normal operations.

Try temporarily disabling all firewalls and other security software to see if that makes any difference.

    Hi,

I tried temporarily disabling the security software and firewalls on both my computer and a second computer. The pictures still get stuck in ‘crunching.’

Since I am having the same issue and trying the same ‘fixes’ to no avail on two computers, it makes me think the issue is not with both computers. Is it possible that the issue is between my blog site and the server?

Any more ideas on how to correct this?

    Thank you,

    Laura

  • No, I’m able to upload without issue, so I’m beginning to suspect the connection. I have seen this sort of issue before on very slow and unreliable connections, and you are uploading full (raw) quality photos. I think one of two things may be happening:

    1. The connection is too slow or unstable to support uploading such large files.

    2. Though unlikely, crunching may just take a very long time on such files.

Would you be able to try uploading a smaller image, or one saved at a lower quality?

    Hi Again,

I just tried uploading a simple picture (from a point-n-shoot camera) and it also showed an IO error message while in the 100% phase and never got fully uploaded.

What’s unusual is that my internet connection has been quicker the last few days than in the last few weeks (I was in a big city this past weekend rather than small towns). That said, none of these connections are great.

The entire process seems to be deteriorating. Now the blog site is starting to freeze or lose its internet connection entirely.

    Any other ideas?

    Thank you,

    Laura

  • Yeah, there are definitely some issues on your end of the connection.

Some point-and-shoot cameras still have decent quality and file size.

Can you use an image editor to cut one down to a very small size, just to see if that makes it through?
