  why are my posts appearing twice?

  You only appear to have one post http://carolynsmithdesigns.com/2012/08/01/ahhh/

  At Appearance -> Theme Options, you currently have “Show four of your latest posts in columns on your home page.” checked.

  Try unchecking that until you have at least four posts.
