Why are my readers getting 504 Gateway Timeout?
-
My WordPress.com hosted website, thefuj.com, has not been reliably accessible for the past few weeks. Often times users are presented with a 504 Gateway Timeout error when accessing my page. Is there something wrong with my settings?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I checked your blog and I didn’t see a 504 error. Are you able to see the problem happen yourself? If not, can you post any information you know about the general location of the people who mentioned the problem and whether they’re all using the same internet service provider or network connection?
When one set of people can see a problem like you described and others cannot, it’s best to try to document as much detailed information about their network connections as you can.
Also, it may help to have the people experiencing the problem try a basic troubleshooting step to clear their browser cache and try again:
-
I absolutely see the problem at work, home and on mobile. I worded it as “my readers” because I didn’t want you to think only I was experiencing the problem. It’s an ongoing issue.
-
As I said before, I am unable to see the problem so it would help if you could provide more information such as:
* general location
* your network provider name
* how many people total have reported seeing the problem -
Another thing you can do is make sure you have tried basic troubleshooting steps such as clearing your browser cache:
-
* general location
New York* your network provider name
Mobile: AT&T
Home: Time Warner Cable
Work: NEW YORK STATE* how many people total have reported seeing the problem
About a dozen reported users over the past couple of weeks.This isn’t a browser issue. I’m getting the message right now. Just refresh the page a few times, about 1 out of 4 times it does not refresh and instead times out.
Gateway Timeout
Server error – server 72.233.69.6 is unreachable at this moment.
Please retry the request or contact your administrator.That IP is a Layered Technologies IP address, which WordPress.com uses for hosting.

I’m in NY as well (Saratoga Springs actually!) and also use Time Warner Cable. I tried testing and here are my test results: https://cloudup.com/cnPyPqHUyjD which I’m posting so you can see I refreshed tons of times in different browsers and never saw the problem.
Aside: I recognize The Egg in your latest post. I’ve never been, but I’d like to some time.
Can anyone else from the forums chime in and let us know if you have any trouble viewing http://thefuj.com/ ?
-
Still having this issue. Just opened up five different posts in five different tabs, one out of five got the 504 error.

My next best advice is for you to keep gathering info. on your side. I did test http://thefuj.com/ a ton and I didn’t see a 504 error once, so I know the problem isn’t consistent but I also need more data about what’s happening. I noticed that the error message you reported earlier said that your computer could not reach our servers and that you should contact your network administrator. Did you try contacting your ISP for help? Do you have any firewall software on your local networks (work or home) that could be blocking WordPress.com servers for some reason?
Could you try collecting traceroute information (try to get it exactly when the problem happens if you can) and paste the results in a reply here? See http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/advanced-browser-troubleshooting/
Because I’m unable to see the problem happen myself, the more data and information you can provide about it, the better.
Could you ask a few of the other people who reported the problem to let you know the following info. and report back here with what they tell you?
* General location
* Internet provider
* How often they see the error (every 4 pageloads?)
* Does the problem happen with any other sites or just http://thefuj.com/ ?If you want to ask others in the forums if they’re can help check the site (I think that would be a good thing to do), then try posting a question in the public forums asking people if they are able to browse http://thefuj.com/ without any problems or if they see any errors:

Website is completely down this morning, for everyone I’ve been able to contact from here to Buffalo, NY.
Also is listed as down on Down for everyone or just me?
http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/thefuj.comLooks like site has been down since yesterday according to my stats since I only had 4 views the entire day. Zero today.

When I started having issues with connectivity I tried to remove CloudFlare out of the picture. I did not update my nameservers back to NS1.WORDPRESS.COM and NS2.WORDPRESS.COM however.
I just updated them on Namecheap right now, but that could take up to 24 hours.
-
If you changed name servers before the trouble started, that could definitely have been the cause of the problems you were seeing.
I checked http://thefuj.com/ and it’s still working for me. Has everything been sorted out on your end as well?
