Why are my view stats inaccurate?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m having an issue viewing the true number of visitors to my blog. For example, when I look at my stats page, it identifies 3 unique visitors. However, I know that at least 5 of my friends visited the page many hours ago, and I received 10 likes on a specific post from other bloggers much earlier in the day as well. My issue may be that I have my own domain for my blog, but I haven’t been able to locate anything that indicates the stats would be skewed if a visitor were to enter my blog through my educateme.co domain as opposed to benkrieger.wordpress.com. Is this the issue I am experiencing? And if so, is there a plugin I can use to help track my site traffic more efficiently?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

First, it shouldn’t matter whether or not visitors use the educateme.co or benkrieger.wordpress.com URL as they both redirect to the same place. Both are counted as a view on your site. One thing to consider is that it may take some time for the stats page to update with new visitors although it shouldn’t take more than an hour or so at the most.

Regarding the “Likes”, it’s important to note that a follower of yours may “Like” your post on Facebook, but that does not directly translate to a view on your blog. In order for a view to register on your stats page, a viewer would have to load your blog in their browser. As for WordPress.com Likes, those act much like Facebook Likes. A reader could use the WordPress.com Reader to follow your blog like this:

In that example, a view would only register on your blog if the reader clicked on the title of the blog post to open up the full blog or went to your blog to view the entire post. If they click the “Like” button from their, a view will not register on your blog. Does that make sense?

Regarding plugins, WordPress.com users are not allowed to upload plugins as explained here:

    Plugins

Does that help to explain the stats page a bit more?

Ah, I didn’t realize that it didn’t count views when you opened up a specific post in the WP Reader. That is most likely where the discrepancy is coming from. Thanks for the info!

Not a problem! Just to clarify, if they open up the full post in the Reader by click the title, a view is counted. However, if they just view the summary, a view is not counted on your stats page.

Let me know if you need anything else!
