Why Are Permalink Settings Not Available on Personal or Premium Plans?
-
Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed that WordPress.com does not allow changing permalink settings (such as switching to “Post Name” permalink structure) unless we upgrade to the Business or Commerce plan. For many users like bloggers and content creators, the permalink structure is a basic requirement for SEO, readability and overall site professionalism. It’s simply a core WordPress feature available on almost every self-hosted installation.
My request:
Could WordPress.com please consider enabling at least the basic permalink options (especially “Post Name”) for Premium plan users? This would be a huge improvement for SEO, usability and site structure without requiring users to jump to the Business tier.I’m sure many others would appreciate this flexibility as well. Looking forward to hearing from the team.
Thank you!

I recommend submitting this feedback directly through WordPress.com’s support or feedback form so the team can track interest in expanding this feature. Hopefully, with enough user support, they might consider making it available for Premium plans in the future!

I also want to highlight the current plan structure and why permalink flexibility should logically be included starting from the second paid tier.
Right now:
- Personal ($4/mo) – Basic entry plan
- Premium ($8/mo) – Designed for more serious bloggers, creators, and professionals
- Business ($25/mo) – Advanced features, plugin access, custom themes
- Commerce ($45/mo) – Full eCommerce features
Given this lineup, it feels strange that only Business and Commerce users can access custom permalink settings, while Premium users are still restricted to the default structure:
example.com/yyyy/mm/dd/postname
For modern websites, SEO, and clean URLs, many creators (including myself) strongly prefer:example.com/postnameThis is the standard URL format across most blogging platforms and almost all WordPress.org installations.
Since Premium is marketed as a powerful plan for professional publishing with monetization, premium themes, expanded design tools and Google Analytics support. Having clean permalinks should absolutely be part of it. It’s not an advanced developer feature, it’s a core blogging need.
So I’m requesting that WordPress.com add the “Post Name” permalink option to at least the Premium plan, especially since it costs more than double the Personal plan. This change would significantly improve SEO, link readability and overall site quality for a very large group of users who don’t need Business-level features.
I also want to mention that I actually signed up for the Premium plan but ended up canceling it solely because of this permalink limitation. Everything else in the plan was perfect for my needs, but not being able to use the simple /postname/ structure was a deal-breaker. I’m certain many other bloggers and creators feel the same way and WordPress.com may be losing potential Premium subscribers because of this one restriction.
I hope the product team considers this. It would be a meaningful improvement for many WordPress.com customers.
