Why are so many names unavailable tied up to accounts that have never been used?

I’m trying to start a blog and keep getting “already exists” but when I go there, there’s nothing there, just the setup to start, but nobody has started it. Lots of people apparently are just claiming names and not using them. You should develop a way to delete such accoutns and make them available if they’re not even touched for a specific period of time, such as 30 days, or a year, or SOMETHING. I went through 10 names and all of them were taken and only one was actually being used! Could you please look into this? The last name I tried was “sayitlikeyoumeanit” and at the page, there is a starter- header that’s set up (not by user but by WordPress) that says something entirely different! What’s going on? Why are there so many empty spaces with names nobody is using but nobody else can have?
My earlier tries were: http://writertowriter.wordpress.com/ (empty but unavailable) and many others the same thing. What are you going to do about this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    re: reserved blogs
When we register a username account the matching blog is reserved for our future use. It cannot be obtained by anyone other than the person who has registered the matching username account.

    re: unused blogs

There is no expiration date on blogs unused or otherwise. If you can make contact on your own with the owner of an unused blog then there is a means of a consenting blog owner to transfer the blog to another username account. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

In the case that there is no contact information Staff will not breach the privacy policy and provide you with an email address.

if you are not successful, you can register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/

Or you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

Nothing is going to be done about this. It is what it is. If you intend to blog over the long term then I recommend you did what I did and purchase your own domain via a domain mapping upgrade.

I have a history blog here, I don’t post often, but I wanted a place where the history I am sharing, much of which is being forgotten by those that were there, would live on and not subject to some use it or loose it Nazi, there are a lot of other places that require posting every 90 or 180 days to keep the content active – so you go away for a while and your site is deleted for you – maybe you would be happier at one of those sites – at least until you did not post for a while and your content was deleted – maybe family memories down the memory hole

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m not talking about that, blogs that aren’tposted very often, I’m talking about the many many blognames that have been locked up WITH NOTHING ON THEM, never startrd at all. Not even a subtitle, not a word or a spec of any post, ever. I wonder if they are “harvesting” names as some people do with domain names, so they can sell them for exorbitant prices. A family history blog that’s even started, whether it has any posts yet or not, at least shows some intention and a moment’s input. The ones I’m talking about do not have anything, not one letter, not one dot, not one second of involvement. This is suspicious to me. Why so many of these? Certainly not for legitimate use.
Wordpress suggests taking an already claimed name and making a .com name out of it for yourself. This would be wrong and unfair to the name’s user if they actually were using it! I wouldn’t want someone to take my blog name and use it for God only knows what, and yet this is legal on WordPress. It shouldn’t be.

The setup here is perfectly legal and as I said above it is what it is and going about it here will not change anything. You are wasting your valuable time.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for your sarcasm and disdain. That’s okay with me. We all make our own way in this life, and everybody’s Karma will catch up with them. In the meantime, have a nice day.
I still think WordPress is the best source and system for blogging. Nothing’s perfect; I can live with that.

  • Unknown's avatar

I was not being either sarcastic of disdainful. I assumed you wanted to register a URL and get on with blogging. I explained how to register another blog with a similar name. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/ I explained that you can register a domain via a domain mapping upgrade and it will not matter what the underlying .wordpress.com address is.

However, you were a sarcastic when you tossed out this: In the meantime, have a nice day.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, I sincerely wish you a nice day, and a happy life. Maybe a few deep breaths would help, and remind yourself that the main thing you are about, (anyone can see) is helping people. Let that be enough. There is time enough. Slow down. Life is sweet. Enjoy it. Maybe, just don’t take everything so seriously. ie. “Don’t sweat the small stuff so much.

Maybe you should take your own advice because behaving like a drama queen is not looking good on you.

  • Unknown's avatar

Also some people register a blog with great intentions and they never quite make it – I helped a friend start a blog – then they never used it so I turned it into a test blog

I have a couple of friends that have a “blog” that they don’t use – great plans and the name is personal to them and means a lot – but it just sites there and I hope they do use the name some day – but blogging in any form is not for everyone and peoples lives change

Me? I just accepted that some sites are taken – that a blog can’t have a user name made from it makes me upset at times as I have a blog – great plans with a name I use other places on the web that I will not get that name here – guess I was lucky a couple of years back when I was looking for a history name and such

  • Unknown's avatar

Be careful. Don’t look in the mirror. I’m sorry you are so unhappy, really, I am. But life is up to you. What you choose is what you get. I’m done with this. Please don’t send me any more emails. Thank you.

Once a site name has been claimed, that address is permanently taken out of circulation, as is the corresponding username. Likewise, when someone claims a username, the corresponding blog address is reserved for them.

At this time we do not allow for the recycling of usernames or WordPress.com addresses. If you want to use one that is already claimed, you will need to contact the owner of the account/site to see if they will transfer it to you. If that’s not possible, you will need to choose a different name.
