Why are some visitors having a hard time leaving comments on my blog post?

    Hello,

I have had some visitors to my blog recently, who have said they could not leave a comment on my blog. The only two requirements I have in place is a name and email address. (I don’t require them to be a WP user).

One person said, “Tried to comment but had to log into WP and it wouldn’t take my PW.”

And another visitor said, “commented! but i’m not sure if it came through because I had a none wordpress email address?”

And other people have been successful at leaving comments…

Is there a solution to this?

    Thank you :)

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi Desiree,

If an user tries to comment using an e-mail address that is connected to a WordPress.com account, we do ask them to log in to verify and prevent impersonation. If the login isn’t taking their password, they’ll need to request a lost password e-mail sent to them by using this form: http://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword

I hope that explains it. If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know!

Thanks for your response…okay, so one of the visitors that are having a hard time commenting said that she was already logged into WordPress, when she tried to leave a comment – looks like she might be a wordpress.org user.

And she said that when she is logged out of wordpress and tries to simply leave a comment, with name and email, she receives a notice saying that she HAS to log in.

Either way, random people (including non-WP users) are having a hard time leaving comments, regardless. Or a message pops up saying they have to log into wordpress, when the only requirements I have set in place is a name and email.

  • For your first user, she may be confusing her self-hosted login with WordPress.com, since logging into the first doesn’t log you into the second.

They likely actually have WordPress.com accounts, though they may have forgotten about it (either they’ve used Gravatar in the past, or made one to activate their Jetpack-enabled WordPress.org blog, etc).

Even though you allowed non-logged-in users to post, we do require that anyone trying to post with an e-mail address associated with a WordPress.com account to login to verify their ownership of the e-mail address to help our users prevent others from spoofing as them, which has been an issue in the past.

If a visitors attempts to comment with an e-mail address not associated with a WordPress.com account, we don’t ask for a login since there’s no way to log them in, but still allow the comment to be submitted.

Thank you, kraftbj :) I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t something I had to do on my end. I appreciate your help!
