Why are there adverts on my blog postings?
-
I’ve just noticed in the last few days that there appears to be adverts added in to most of my blog postings from day one to within the last two or three months. They’re not in the recent postings, but looking back at my site, I do find this rather intrusive, especially as there are products that I don’t use or condone, if that’s the right word.
While I understand that this is a free site and you thusly must require an income via advert revenue, do they have to be plonked randomly into our postings? Talking about my family life, personal things and such, then having some advert for a video game (or some such) tagged onto the end of the posting just cheapens the experience and does sit well with me.
I do not see these adverts whilst logged on to WordPress, though I do when I’m not and they certainly do appear for those reading my blog too.
Respectfully, is there any way to switch these off?

To support the service (and keep free features free), we do sometimes run advertisements. We try hard to make the ads discreet and effective and only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade.

Thanks for your reply, I kind of guessed that this would be the case as I did mention the need for revenue making in my original question for a site that is free to users like this. There is one issue that I would like to raise and it is this:
You say (and I’ve seen this in the Support area too)
“We try hard to make the ads discreet and effective and only run them in limited places.”I’d hardly call a full sized video advert stuck on the tail end of many of my early postings as “discreet” or “limited”. They are all over the place and are quite intrusive. Looking at them, it could appear as if I’ve placed them there.
It is a little perplexing and disjointing, but if this is how the system has to work to gain revenue, then so-be-it, I do thoroughly understand, even if I don’t like it. I do hope that WordPress can look into revising this somehow to make these ads genuinely discreet and not as gratuitous as they currently are.
Just as an example of the discreet nature of these adverts, I’ve done a frame grab to illustrate the point. You can see it here:

Hi there,
Thanks for your feedback. I apologize for any frustration this ad may have caused.
We are always working to improve the WordPress experience – regarding ads and otherwise – and appreciate suggestions like this from users like you.

No need to apologize, I understand why they are there. Perhaps WordPress could look into the idea of a smaller banner advert in a box of its own at the bottom of the posts so that it doesn’t look like the blogger has put it there (I genuinely do feel that this distinction has to be made)… or maybe even a pop up. I know these are just as intrusive, but at least it gives reader the option to ignore them, should they desire to. Obviously advertisers probably wouldn’t want this option, but I’m just throwing a couple of ideas out there in the hopes that something may stick.
Thanks for listening anyway, much appreciated.
