Why are unwanted links to various products appearing on my posts?
-
My posts are appearing with links on certain words that I did not put there. The links claim to be from somebody called “Text Enhance” and they try to get the reader to buy certain products.
I doubt this is a WordPress-sanctioned deal — I mean, if it is, I would be highly offended, and I don’t know who wouldn’t be. How do I get this crap to stop?

To support the service (and keep free features free), we sometimes run advertisements, and the agreement for this has been in our terms of service since 2006.
We try hard to only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

I’ll do that — but this is a lot different of a thing than just “running ads.” And I’ve been on WordPress since 2007, have four blogs going at the moment, and have NEVER seen anything like this. Before today — and today it has happened three times.
Are we sure we are talking about the same thing? I’m referring to links being placed on actual words of my own authorship — as though I had put them there myself. Is this the issue you are addressing?

Hmm. Just happened on two more posts of mine. Honestly, I thought I had a virus. Are you saying the only sure way that I can get these to stop is by paying for an upgrade? I have been wanting to upgrade — I love WordPress. But now I don’t know if I will.
The thing that disturbs me about this is that it appears at first as though the links were of my own selection. For example, the word “music” has a link to it on one of my posts today; it’s well known that I am a composer who often links to his original pieces; a reader of mine could have clicked on that expecting to hear a song, and instead is offered a chance to win a free iPod, or something along those lines.
It’s perturbing. I really do hope this stops soon. I had to have to defect to a different site.
But I do understand times being hard, and paying the bills not being easy these days. Good luck with everything.

There’s one up there — on the word “win.” See it? Is that the same thing you’re talking about?
-
Yes, that’s what I’m referring to.
We run ads at very levels to “pay the bills” and keep your blog free to use. They only way to remove them would be to effectively offset those costs by purchasing a No Ads upgrade.

OK. It just still seems a little odd that I’m getting hit with all of them on one single day, and at various different places.
For example, how come it appeared in my comment here? My comment to you? And before that, on two of my “Gratitude Lists” at http://starsworth.wordpress.com — you see what I’m asking? Why all in one day? Why in different places? And — (I might as well say it) — WHY ME??

It’s appearing for you in the forums? No, I definitely don’t see that, and we don’t run ads here.
Considering that, I’d say there is a problem on your computer. Three things to try:
1. Clear your browser’s cookies and cache: http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
2. Disable and browser add-ons or extensions.
3. Try a different browser to rule-out a browser-specific issue: http://browsehappy.com/

Whew! Finally! For a while there, I was thinking, this is really wild. I’m very glad we were *not* both talking about the same thing. I was starting to think along the lines of class action suits, extortion, etc.
Yeah, WordPress wouldn’t have done that. And I will upgrade when I can. I think it might be a browser add-on issue, I had been exploring those on Mozilla this morning. I happen to have cleared the cookies and cache earlier today. I’ll try Chrome.
Thanks.
