Why are you capping the amount of followers we can have?
-
I’ve only been here a few months and OM’s blog disappeared from my reader at one point. I had to go find him manually and re follow, though I had never decided to unfollow this interesting, productive and helpful blog. I’m a newbie and don’t “get” all the technicalities yet. I just know this happened to me. I use my phone app most often and sometimes my laptop (Mac)
I’m going to try to find the place in my admin panel to check on blogs I follow, to see if any have been unfollowed. I know I have not done that myself apart from one instance of something I considered to be pornography.

@shawnajroberts
Here’s some more useless answers from a Volunteer ;)Perhaps this is related to disabled social features. That can happen when a blogger is manifesting spam-like behaviors by speed liking and speed following many other blogs in a short timeframe and/or when they harass others. I see a thread wherein rootjosh is helping another blogger to unfollow one of the very blogs cited here (a blog that has been previously suspended). I also see another thread wherein a blogger is complaining about that same blogger too and one a buddy too re: Why can’t you block users? Stop trolling “pingbacks”?
-
Timethief –
I neither speed like nor do I speed follow anyone. I read posts and if I like them, I like them. I am much more discerning about who I follow and tend to keep my list rather small so that I can read new posts and not just simply like them from my reader sight unseen. What I don’t appreciate is having my list of followed blogs weeded for me. Which is why I spoke up here and in private. I just want the problem solved so that I can go back to enjoying my reader again rather than having to hunt for lost follows.

@thedailyblabber
I did not address you or refer to you and your blog in any way in this thread. I wish you well with getting your issue resolved and I know shawnajroberts will see to it. -
@thedailyblabber – Thanks so much for your follow up! I’m going to summarize this information for our developers and see if we can figure out what’s happening. I may come back with more questions shortly. :)
@annj49 – Thanks for chiming in. If you have any of the information I requested above from thedailyblabber, that would really help us be able to dig into your instance of this issue as well.
@timethief – I think this is unrelated to the disabled social features, but I’ll definitely mention it to the dev that’s working with me on this. Maybe it will ring some bells. :)
Just a reminder for all, we are coming up on the weekend. I will likely not hear back from our devs about this until next week, at which point I’ll likely have more questions for you. Thank you for bearing with us. We definitely want to get this fixed. We do not in any way want to be removing site subscriptions without your permission.
I’ll be around this weekend, so if you have more information to pass along or any questions, feel free to chime in! Then I can hit the ground running with the developer on Monday. :D
-
@raincoaster & @auxclass – I’ve deleted your latest comments here. Please do not post any more antagonizing comments. If you’d like to contribute to this thread, please follow up with the information I asked for above as it pertains to your own instances of being removed as a follower.
-
@shawnajroberts – so what about this one?
And please only happiness engineers respond. I don’t need worthless answers from “volunteers” thanks.
-
As you can see, I’ve addressed that above. If you have concerns about the way I’ve handled this, feel free to email us, but let’s keep it out of this support thread.

It’s well known that Opinionated Man spent one third of his time blogging “following” as per his own words.
http://aopinionatedman.com/2015/02/11/my-blogging-model/
He follows 500, but has followed up to 2000 per day….
http://aopinionatedman.com/2015/02/11/an-introduction-to-powerblogging-part-1/
He also spends time abusing extremely helpful forum volunteers such as Timethief.
Clearly at the volume blogs, and spends time, you can imagine how many “follows” he has made.
He was warned against such spammy behavior by others, but chose to proceed with his spam.
Thus, his concerns are most like extremely unique, as he’s bumping up HARD against WordPress’ attempts to fight spammers, as noted by Timethief and staff.
If you follow a reasonable amount of people, it;s entirely possible any “unfollowing” is a bug, and will be addressed with reasonable responses to the staffs requests.
As for OM, he leaves out tons of context when he comes to make his baseless accusations and abuse staff.
I still have no idea why WordPress tolerates his behavior.
-
OM is a very successful, interesting, and prolific blogger, who spends a great deal of time educating beginning bloggers and creating a viable forum for them to meet as many other bloggers as possible in the shortest time frame. I think that’s a wonderful GIFT!
-
I’m never surprised when people come out in support of people that use threats of violence to get their way.
Saddened, but not surprised.
It is what it is, and why I’m glad WordPress actually supports free speech.
Personally I am not afraid of OM, and have long blogged about his threats to the point that Twitter’s moderation policy is changing.
I continue to hope that WordPress will do the right thing, it’s a great platform.

@shawnajroberts
I don’t believe the unfollowing problem has anything to do with mass following by the person it’s happening to – people have discovered they’ve unfollowed me without purposely doing it, and I don’t think I’ve ever followed more than 25 blogs in a day.
Don’t ask me how long ago this was or who, or anything else for that matter – all I can say is it was at least a year ago. It’s happened to a few people I know – both ways. AND I’ve discovered that I’ve unfollowed blogs as well. Again, don’t ask. :P Sorry. -
Like many people, Opinionated Man was the first follower on my blog.
I had no issues with Opinionated Man, and rarely if ever read his blog until he showed up on my blog to troll me, and harass me for blogging about The Wine Wankers and their top 100 social media wine list.
As my blogs were disseminated by Klout and other social media content aggregators, and other News media questioned The Wine Wankers about their list Opinionated Man tried to bully me out of blogging about The Wine Wankers, apparently at their request.
After I read some of Opinionated Man’s blog, I determined that he is simply a dangerous bully with quite a large platform here. So I determined that I should also blog about that.
This has led Opinionated Man to tweet/blog that he feels a need to kill, and that I am not getting the message.
I got the message. Opinionated Man is a predator and needs to be dealt with by WordPress so they have a safe social media blogging platform that respects the individual, and is a safe place to blog.
So I continue to blog about him, his threats, and the larger implications for social media and free speech.
Opionated Man is not the subject of my blogs now, he is simply some of the best evidence I have for predators on the internet.
If bloggers that threaten other bloggers are your cup of tea, by all means follow Opinionated Man.

to the wordpress guru’s, the notifications seem to be mostly working now, it just sporadically stops working, still having issues of having to re follow blogs, I actually have no issue with following OM’s blog, it’s other blogs , like Nutsrok and Linda G Hill and a few others , I’ve been following these blogs a long time and find that wordpress auto unfollows , can you look into this and fix it please?
I have also have trouble giving follow backs, I am one of those bloggers who believe if you follow my blog, I should return the favor and follow your’s as well ( it’s the polite thing to do) when I start following a new blogger or someone who clicked on my blog follow button, I often have to re follow multiple times before it sticks… it’s very annoying.
also the reader is wonky, I am not getting all the blogs I follow in my reader, I miss posts and I have had my reader spammed by a blog called 420 , I am NOT subscribed to it, yet it floods my reader with different blogs all pertaining to marijuana , I have no interest in that and have had to block over 500 blogs just to clear out my reader , and I had to block repeatedly as the block feature doesn’t work properly.
How I follow blogs : usually from the follow button in the top left hand corner that wordpress provides, I also will use the blogs widget follow button if they have one, and rarely do I follow via email, unless it is a blog that I really enjoy.
I realize that wordpress is a multi platform site, ( phone, tablet computer etc. ) perhaps with all the changes and new features you have added to make wordpress more user friendly to smart phones and tablets, you have inadvertently made it more complicated for those of us that use desktops and laptops? perhaps you can look into this as well, as most of the glitches with your wordpress programs are happening to desktop and laptop users.
and just one more question , so I don’t get lumped into your spammer category, I am working hard towards building a follower base that exceeds 1000+ , in turn I too will eventually be following 1000+ blogs , not saying I am going to read them all every single day, as with a newspaper, the average person only reads what catches their eye, or a specific topic of interest, how many blogs can a person safely follow per day ( 5? 10? 15? 20? ) without being accused of being a spammer, I’d like to post the actual number on my site so people don’t innocently exceed your numbers and get accused of being a spammer.
if you guys could look into these issues I have wrote about it would be greatly appreciated
Thank you -
Hey all. Thanks so much for following up with me. Moving forward in this thread, let’s keep the conversation on the issue at hand – random unrequested unfollows – rather than a discussion about aopinionatedman, or any other user. As far as we can tell, mass following and liking is not related to this issue. There is no need to further discuss that theory.
@butchcountry67 – It sounds like you have some issues that are specific to this unfollowing issue. I’d love to get those sorted for you. Could you start a new thread here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1
And and the tag modlook. Mention that I asked you to open a new thread and I or another forums Happiness Engineer will take a look. It will be a lot easier to work through the issues you’re seeing with your Reader in a thread of your own. :)

As long as Following is used as a fundamental spam tool, there is no social obligation whatsoever to follow back. None. Don’t be drawn into that. If someone sends you an email about erectile disfunction are you obligated to send them one back?
Take it strictly on a case by case basis, and only Follow those in whose blogs you are actually interested.
-
@raincoaster
Following back blogs whether or not one is interested (as opposed to being offended) by them seems to me to be a personal preference. You make it sound like an order, in which case are we indeed limited to only following blogs in which we’re interested? Is there specific harm in following something we may or may not ever read? -
Thanks I started a new thread or what ever you guys call it ms ShawnaJRoberts :) it’s about the auto unfollows and a couple small things like the notifications and the reader , I combined it all because I don’t want to start multiple threads or spam the help forum .
-
Lindaghill, I’m not issuing orders, I’m offering guidance. You are entirely free not to take it.
The potential harm in feeling obligated to follow back is in facilitating spam, exposing yourself to malware, making criminals a teensy bit richer (since they’re paid to spam follow), and most importantly in reducing the actual social connections that blogging can build.
If all party invitations were to Tupperware parties, the value of parties themselves would go down.
